Focal = Managerial Gossip

Intel is a gossip driven company.

Focal is nothing but a group of managers gossiping about their employees. The result of the gossip is what you get in your focal result.

Don't bother filling out a focal form, it is not even considered in the focal process. Rather concentrate on spreading good gossip about yourself among managers.

@4xzu. In theory they could adjust the Focal criteria to meet the number of lay-offs (e.g. even SSL3 makes one eligible), in practice age and salary will have an impact. Again only brown nosers stay on their jobs.

Will new CEO force to make focal result public to all employee? Not include financial related information, just rate and ranking result. This gives a clear picture on how to build successful career inside Intel.

It will be based on corruption. The sycophants will get positive reviews, the individualists will get poor reviews and be laid off. Performance or ability will be excluded.

One wonders what role - if any - Focal will have in decisions to retain or lay off the thousands and thousands of people when Intel re-orgs after they get a new CEO (yes...it's coming).

Will it be formulaic? Based on skills? Based on age and salary? Geography?

As many pointed out before in this forum, FOCAL creates back stabbing and brown-nosing culture. "Only brown-nosers stay on their jobs". Many companies already abandoned the idea of ranking the employees.

The situation was never this bad under PSO. I was all initiated under BK under the guise of his Diversity Movement. Who cares that these people are completely ignorant and inexperienced, as long as they contribute to meaningful statistics that BK could brag about? He did not care if he literally destroyed people's lives as long as his sacred movement was successful and was newsworthy. In addition it aided in the cover up of his immoral affairs. He got the ball rolling and the problem is that nobody has come out to stop it. Corruption at it's worst!

Often the "orders" to give an employee an SL4 are given to the FLM by the SLM. Hence, it provides cover for the cowardice of the SLM and puts the gossip all about the FLM and how unfair he/she is. Shows you how corrupt the mgmt is at EVERY level since the FLMs do not even question the decision made by the SLM and follow orders directly in hope that they themselves do not get laid off for insubordination. Intel FLM have no morality left to not even admit these unfair hit jobs occur over and over again. They should resign their positions since they are involved with all these sham layoffs.

@slc. You are totally correct. A manager can give someone he/she doesn't like a S/SSL4 without any justification apart to himself/herself. And this means layoff at anytime to that person. The message is clear - once one is given S/SSL4 he/she should start looking for another job immediately.

B is worse under octane and now only place left for real engineers is N. Lets see how long the journey lasts here

To give someone an S/SL4 rating there isn't even any need to include anything negative on FOCAL. That's why that rating and the ACT layoff around it was so screwed up: there was little consistency across managers around who got SL4s, especially S/SL4s.

So much work at Intel is far-removed from actual external customers and the real world. It's a world of internal processes and subjectivity. Who did better (or worse!) at revising Powerpoint slides for an endless internal funding process... or updating status reports for management? Who was late once for a pointless internal meaning because another meeting ran over? Uh, that guy. He gets an SL4 and the rest get an SL3. Especially if the FLM didn't like the guy who was late once anyway...

@zgu 👍 😎 👌... yes, and ppl involved who did it, need to be taught a lesson for using lies to mess with the wrong person ! Don't involve Intel HR to sort it, just do it yourself. They are going to be sorry. Strike, when they least expect it.

confirmed @ywp. I was a manager at Intel between 2007-2009, and during a focal time, my manager once told me "I am looking for dirt" on employee who reported to me in my group. I was trying to write the positive accomplishments, and write the areas of developments as enhancement, i.e. looking ahead and to support career growth for the employees. But I got a BE from my manager that year, and I filed an open door investigation against my manager and I got a reversal on my focal to S. I had to switch groups of course since could not continue reporting to manager who tried to screw me.

You are correct. This gossip input also highly determined who was laid off in 2015-2016. FLMs were ordered to go out into their organizations and dig up any dirt about targeted employees prior to Focals. Then they entered this BS gossip into the employees' Focals as a reason to give them SL4 stock level. The employees did not even have a chance to defend themselves against these lies that were spread against them. The other managers who knew about targeted employees distributed these lies to protect their own jobs along with their employees, all without any evidence whatsoever that the targeted employee was a poor performer. This evil targeting will occur again again and again as and when needed so no employee should ever feel comfortable with their status.
