Doesn’t matter to me whether the company I’m working for is leading the market. As long as I get paid well, good benefits, continue to improve my skills, have goals/opportunities to strive for, and a good work/life balance, I’m good. Obviously, it really depends on your situation, your organization, etc. I’ll start looking again if things get gloomy. If I get laid off, I’ll find a new job. I might get paid a little less, but I’m not going to waste my time fuming at my previous employer; tech jobs are in high demand!

Agreed, it seems to be improving.

Nothing earth shattering but there's a sense that something has changed from the top down.

I have a colleague just left HPE. It is really not about the atmosphere .. which has improved, but the future of the company.

I think HPE may be stabilizing, but given how hot the tech market is, is there a reason to work for a company that is not leading the market, unless there is no better alternatives?

the analysis you can make of the situation also depends on where you are. I'm in EMEA in a country which is somehow black listed at the corp level for any kind of investment/hiring etc ... then negative feelings globally, we do nto see a future for us in this structure, whereas most of us here contributed to what HP has become and still have their brains operational to contribute.

Agreed, overall employee experience is improving however company needs to refine its own strategy.

Try and get in on the HPI side (PC/printing). Things are calmer and smoother there. They are grabbing more of the declining PC and printing markets but they are doing well with that. 3D printing is 5-10 years away from helping the bottom line in any significant way but it could be big down the road. It's a long term strategy.

If you're in the US, it's probably a backfill position. Antonio coming in wasn't really enough to stop the extreme attrition rate. Unfortunately the damage is pretty much irreparable at this point. But depending on your position, maybe it's worth considering. Once you're at rock bottom, nowhere to go but up.

"It all depends on the group you hire into" is a good and honest but not-so-helpful answer!

I have seen good and bad news... "Borderline personality disorder" (very smug, very arrogant) managers have been let go recently, but so have good managers, where I am at (and I don't want to say where I am at). NEW managers with "Borderline personality disorder" have been hired as well!!!

Older, hard-working, competent people have been let go, so as to hire young folks who can barely be bothered to show up for work, in some cases, and the heat is STILL heavily on, to ditch the old folks, and hire young folks... All just for $100 K salaries getting cut down to $75 K salaries, which is nothing, compared to health care costs and facilities costs, administrative costs, etc., per-employee. It makes no sense!

Bad office politics centered around making the other guy look bad, so that you can look good, for layoffs and near-non-existent raises, persists, due to "bell curve" reviews, and there seems to be no hope that this will ever change. They will give you "promotions" in job grade, w/o increase in pay, so that they can justify writing harsher reviews on you, for your higher job grade! I kid you not!

I do agree that (even though we KNOW there are layoffs coming) they may not be as large or frequent as before.

Yes, I think things may be getting better over-all, ignoring the site-to-site differences of course... Why? My evidence? This forum right here!!! Complaining is waning! A week and more can go by, w/o a fresh post!

It appears to have calmed down and big layoffs might have actually stopped. But since you are considering coming in from a position of strength, do negotiate hard on Salary and benefits. Those who stayed behind and did not switch for one reason or another have suffered greatly in terms of salary stagnation over the last many many years. There has not even been any adjustment for inflation. So, if you do decide to jump back in, be sure to come in at a very competitive salary level, since it may be years before you see a salary raise. again.
