Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Check this out (Whirlpool wants their appliances back, but Whirlpool isn't sold at Sears anymore *but* they still are an OEM for Kenmore.)

https://nypost.com/2018/10/26/whirlpool-doesnt-want-sears-selling-any-of-its-appliances/

We no longer carry Whirlpool-branded appliances or their subsidiary brands including Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana but Whirlpool is one of the biggest OEMs for Kenmore appliances. The article didn't declare whether the appliances it wanted back in question were Whirlpool and their brands or any Kenmore appliances made by Whirlpool. Since Whirlpool and their brands were pulled out of the stores a while ago, it follows that Whirlpool wants the Kenmore appliances it made for Sears returned.

To put this in perspective, Just about all of Kenmore laundry is Whirlpool-made except for the front-loading washers, which are LG-made and a couple models from Electrolux/Frigidaire (the laundry centers and I think one model of front load washer/dryer pair). I think all of the dishwashers are Whirlpool save for the 18-inch, which is Electrolux/Frigidaire. A good portion of the fridges are Whirlpool as well (though Electrolux/Frigidaire makes a lot of the lower/midrange and LG supplies most of the higher-end). Ranges, cooktops and wall ovens are mostly Electrolux/Frigidaire-made if I recall.

This is not good.

@2whr, it will be seen if SHOS declares bankruptcy since 80% of their freight comes from SHLD.

Good question 2zbh. My understanding was that Sears owned the appliances at Hometown until they were sold. Kind of like consignment, less inventory for store owners to pay for. The thing I read said the franchisee provided the location and staffing and Sears (SHOS) did the rest.

Here is a question that some have not thought about. Cam Whirlpool pull their Kenmore products from SHOS owned stores. Sears Hometown/ Outlet since those stores are still supplied from SHLD?

Or are SHOS stores immune from this dispute?

"Doesn't Whirlpool have to go through the bankruptcy courts to take back the Kenmore appliances it made for Sears?"

Yes. Whirlpool filed with the bankruptcy court to request permission to do so.

"He is questioning if Whirlpool is asking about the Kenmore branded products made by them. Which is a valid question."

Of course they are. Non-Kenmore-branded Whirlpool products were pulled from Sears over a year ago.

Has anybody heard anything about this going forward, like by email, an MRN disposition, stop sale directive, etc? Are there any meetings or conversations about this at Hoffman? Doesn't Whirlpool have to go through the bankruptcy courts to take back the Kenmore appliances it made for Sears?

What about LG, Samsung and Frigidaire? Has anybody heard anything from them about wanting to stop or take back shipments?

This seems like it would bring Sears to its knees for the final time if Whirlpool decides to go through with this, though I can't necessarily blame them for wanting to do this.

I'm sorry for those working in HA but the image of guys coming in and wheeling appliances off the sales floor strikes me as funny. I have a perverse sense of humor.

The real sales people in HA could sell ice cubes to the Eskimos if they have survived Sears this long. A few I know think they can only work at Sears.

Ummm. @VQkMHFs knows exactly what he is talking about. I didn't see anything wrong with anything that he has stated. He is questioning if Whirlpool is asking about the Kenmore branded products made by them. Which is a valid question. All of the top loading laundry (except for one by LG), one top mount and all SXS (except for 2 (one is LG one is Fridgidaire)), all of the dishwashers (except for the 18" model) and 3 Slide in free standing ranges are made by Whirlpool and carry the Kenmore name. If the NYT article is correct, then Sears is going to have a HUGE availability problem as a LOT of the Kenmore products on the floor are sourced by Whirlpool.

If you don't believe me. Then check the first 3 numbers on the model number of each of the product lines described. Do a google search for "Kenmore source codes" and that will tell you who manufactured what.

In fact...

SRC.ItemRevision is the format of a Kenmore model number

Whirlpool sources....

154 WHIRLPOOL CORP

664 WHIRLPOOL CORP

665 WHIRLPOOL CORP

110 WHIRLPOOL CORP

106 WHIRLPOOL CORP

107 WHIRLPOOL CORP

About a year ago, there were rumors going around about Daewoo and Guangdong Midea replacing the Kenmore products sourced from Whirlpool because of some issues with the ongoing relationship with Whirlpool, since the OP is correct in the fact that many Kenmore appliances are Whirlpool sourced. I was at Hoffman and I don't work there any more, so I don't know what had transpired over the last year or so. At any rate, I don't think that the relations between Whirlpool and Sears had improved.

The thing with Daewoo and Guangdong Midea is that they are both third-rate manufacturers looking to get a stronghold in the US market. However, I am not sure if even they would be willing to roll the dice. Sears had been sourcing from both for some time (mainly specialty refrigeration and home environmental) but their "risk exposure" is and was a lot smaller than if they basically took over the Whirlpool-sourced line.

Yes , most of the cooking appliances are Frigidaire , Working for a part of their home services division , I know that Frigidaire is not happy with Sears either , Would not be surprised to see them do something similar if their contract agreement with Sears gives them the ability . Whirlpool has been disgusted with Sears for at least 5 years .
