Thread regarding CA Technologies (CA Inc.) layoffs

Regarding the "my fears" and "my feelings" posts

Your fears??? Dude, stop.

You don't have "fears"... you either already know you're not making the cut and are too stubborn to admit it, or you are simply not paying any attention.

Broadcom WILL focus on the top accounts and WILL use as few resources as possible to do it. They have been clear about this from day one. Look at what the official posts say on Yammer. Look at what Broadcom has a pattern of doing. Look at the posts here where multiple people have confirmed the content. You already know this is a fact.

Broadcom runs an extremely lean ship. They expect lots from the people they employ, but they pay them well for doing it.

Profitable products will stay for now. They will be labeled as CA, a Broadcom Company.

Most all security and mainframe will go to Broadcom. They will be managed by current leaders in the security and mainframe BU's.

Sales will be cut drastically as small/medium customers will be turned over to partners.

Base salaries should go up. IC will drop. You may get a retention bonus that will pay out over four years.

Commissions will be paid quarterly, not monthly.

Expect strong amounts of AVGO stock if you perform well. Expect to be dismissed quickly if you don't.

Recent acquisitions that still operate as their own business units will most likely be sold off. Vericode, Atomic, Blazemeter, etc. They may be trendy but they are not profitable in the big scheme of things.

Broadcom outsources most support and services. GIS will be gutted as Google and hardware vendors provide support for Broadcom's hardware and email/office suite.

Support will most likely go to offshored companies in India and the Philippines.

Most services will go to partners, especially for small/medium customers.

The top few performing employees in those groups will be kept by Broadcom to VIP service the much smaller customer base they keep.

You probably worked hard and tried to make a difference while management took all they could until they cherry-picked their golden parachutes. S---s, but buck-up camper, welcome to the real world. Talk all you want but you would have done the same thing if you were in their shoes.

We are living in a material world and we are all material girls. Or boys.

You will know your official fate in about 13 days. You can A) keep coming to this site and hoping someone tells you what you want to hear to make you feel good, or, B) update your resume and start lining up new opportunities, maybe even getting some double-dip action in the meantime.

Your fate is in YOUR hands. NOT CA's, NOT Broadcom's. NOT anonymous posters on a gossip board.

Now, go drink away your sorrows and cry into your pillow as you fall asleep tonight.

Then, wake up tomorrow, have some strong coffee, put on your big boy pants, and go make your parents proud.

In the words of the Notorious B.I.G.

If I wasn't in the rap game

I'd probably have a key knee-deep in the crack game

Because the streets is a short stop

Either you're slinging crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot

Sh--, it's hard being young from the slums.

Now, hate me all you want but you know I'm right.

Come back here in a year and reply with how much happier you are.

I'll be proud of you.

PEACE. I'm out.

And starting a new job tomorrow WHILE I collect my last few checks from CA.

IMHO in three years no one but the mainframe engineers will be left. CA Enterprise software was somewhere between barely breathing and slowly dying - Broadcom is going to pull the plug on the life support. Chances for promotion will be close to zero.

75 percent of the employees are done this year, so it’s up to each person to selfishly maximize their financial, gain. For nearly every VP and higher, that was a Day 1 exit with guaranteed severance and stock. For those on transition, each day is a high paid prison sentence. Hope for an early parole.

It is totally a financial game for both sides. For Broadcom, it’s how to squeeze every single dollar out of this company. So for me, it’s how to squeeze every single dollar out of CA and Broadcom.

"What if they divest you without paying?"

That's a risk I will take. My product is not super profitable so I think they won't find a buyer day 1.

And if they do.... I still quit

Not seeing a point of doing the minimum. If you're there, and being paid to be there, then you work. It's not some sort of game where you try to do as little as possible while getting paid for it! Who knows if you work hard you just might impress the right people and keep your job. At any rate you will gain nothing by not continuing to apply yourself.

I agree divestiture is a worry but just remember you need several things to happen

  1. You are kept on by Broadcom - 50 percent chance at best

  2. Broadcom finds a buyer for your business - probably less than 50 percent chance

  3. The buyer decides to take you

4 . The buyer then fires you and screws you. - probably less than 25 percent chance

Treat every week after November 5th like your severance with benefits. Do the minimum and hope Broadcom decides to lay you off (without cause).

@VM4TOww-1mwb. What if they divest you without paying?

This whole thing is a win win situation. Either they pay you to leave or you get to stay. They couldn't really pay me enough to stay so i'm hoping they pay me to leave!

If you worry about losing severance with a new job, just be frank with your new employer, maybe they will turn it into a signing bonus in order to compensate your lost.

Best and most accurate post so far, especially in combo with VM4TOww-1ucd remarks. This is what it's like, dear colleagues worldwide, so better take this one seriously and be warned. If you are still shocked when all of this will be officially announced in a few weeks time, well... I don't feel for you.

Solid post. Only addition I would make is that there are no sacred cow locations. No crystal ball that says “Islandia is safe” or “Framingham is safe”.

Broadcom has NO LOYALTY to any location. This is a financial transaction. There is no “we love you, please work for us, we will kiss your backside and give you a safe space”.

Any CA’ers who remember the acquisitions of 15+ years ago this is it - in reverse. If you fit their financial and business model, you have a job. If you don’t, you won’t, it is nothing personal.

Broadcom took on nearly $19 billion of debt - not including transition and severance costs - to buy CA. They have to make the numbers work, and the majority of CA’s costs are in people.

Understand that and mentally move on.

Honestly. If it’s “so obvious” who this is, can you please tell us? At least tell me? I’d like a reference to wherever they went.

Nice post the only problem is that some employees will be kept on for at least the transitional period and if those employees decide to look for, get and accept a new job and are ultimately not released by Broadcom they may lose a little or a lot in severance and vested stock. I know someone in that exact predicament. So sure, it's great to say "don't stick around, go out and look for a new job" but it might not be all that practical especially for an employee who might have been there 20 years and is looking at a huge severance package that they would lose if they are not released during the acquisition and decide to quit.
