Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

LC all employee

Anyone watched the all employee yesterday? What do you think?

My take:

  • I am unable to recall a single idea, thought, sentence...1 hour of no content

  • many questions (all?) went just unanswered. Some of them were pretty direct (what will you do short term? long term? what needs to be fixed in GE?). I was impressed by his ability on that

  • no message of hope, no vision, no charisma. No call for action to fix the mess.

  • no mention of HOW we are going to get out of this mess, and WHAT the final destination is

  • I clearly felt he has no skin in the game. No passion. He did not come through as a commander in chief who wants to lead his soldiers to victory. He is in for the money only, which means he will do nothing to make GE a healthier business and a place people would love to work in. I fear his goal is just to maximise his cash out in the shortest timeframe, to please Trian, the investors, and his pocket. And this just to bring to stock value to where it was when JF took over.

So sad... how much I would love to hear this chap saying, and meaning it: yes, we are in a big mess, yes, but I will throw all of myself mind and soul into making this company a great place to work.

game over

Why do employees ever think that leaders are their to help them or help company do well in the log run? The main and only objective for leaders is to make money in the short run and move away. If this somehow helps employees/company gloat over it but is never the main intention

The last I checked there is almost 300k workers. How about the mo--n that made this statement lay out his management plan to lead this ship. Please tell us what business plan you’ve created and what new technology you’ve created to generate business. That is truly the problem with this Company that entitled workers who complain instead of just doing their jobs. How about you post your name so you can get handed your walking papers. You can go lead another business. Oh wait you won’t because you’re sitting in the best job you’ll ever have.

Hopefully you now understand why I was willing to cut my retirement short. I'll walk out with a minimum $80 million for continuing the vagueness

He did fine for 3 weeks in.

If he had planned to a plan forward, people would have criticized hin for shoot first, aim later.

He is very measured and deliberate in getting to decision. He is better at execution than previous two CEOs, per his track record. Will see how he does at GE.

Problems in power are ones of execution, including being able to downsize when market tanks. Too much hand wringing about market, Alstom, Digital, immelt etc. Stop the nonsense and get to running like a real business.

I would take his emphasis on Kaizen on improving execution on cost and cycle of the product. Frankly, Power has been in constant churn for years now and our execution has not been good, certainly on the financials.

Step one: fire Russel Stokes, immediately. That man has no clue what he is doing. He’s got to go.

It still puzzles me that these folks, with all the experience they have and the number of good advices they can get...they still do not get it that unless you inspire employees and provide them with a vision, the organization will never follow you, and you ultimately will fail as the leader of that organization. It's a truth deeply rooted in human nature, and there are countless of management books on this. Still they do not get it. If you do not provide employees with a vision and with the prospect of personal growth and that things will be better, they will never follow you. Because they will die. Humans die if they cannot project themselves in a better future. This lad earns millions, and still do not get this basic truth. He will fail, just because of that.

Oh god, Kaizen...another silly string of required training that no one will take seriously...great! That’ll fix the horrible management problems right away.

I got one thing, Kaizen which will be Six Sigma all over again... brace yourselves for another flood of Buzz words that will do nothing.

PS: Kaizen and Six Sigma do work when applying correctly, something GE never done, it's like saying the only tool one needs is a hammer.

Other than that is more of the usual, always looking to fix from the management down, where all the issues that save money in a sustainable way would be too look from the bottom up.
