@1iku Bit harsh of you to call the US a Third World country just because workers‘ rights are pratically non-existent there. But yes, good argument you make there in support of unions in the US. They are necessary until the US adopts basic workers‘ rights comparable to the rest of the industrialized world.

Ha, ha. First strike called 49% intel workers walk. Trump labels strikers enemy of people/pagans. Trump opens up h1 and u1 new visas to bust Unions. INTEL FLIES NON STOP ENGINEERS BING 777 FROM isarel, China, India Engineers. By 2nd quarter Intel profits sky rocket due to much lower cost and huge head count reduction Stock sooars. :). Uber says driver shortage is solved, Intel engineers are signing up in droves to shuttle immigrant Engineers to work.

Unions work in 3rd world countries. For the rest of us they’re a relic of ancient times, before workers rights laws existed. Time to modernize already.

@npz Unions don‘t work? So I ask the obvious question: Why do they work so well in so many countries?

Of course, you can ask that question about many issues where conservatives categorically and dogmatically claim „It does not work“. Universal healthcare, gun control, public transportation... all issues that work wonderfully well in other countries and contribute to the prosperity and safety of the people there. But conservatives keep claiming: „Doesn‘t work!!“

Sure, if you have never left a 100 mile radius around the trailer where your father and your mother/aunt conceived you, it‘s difficult to know what actually works in other places or not. Only 42% of all Americans hold a passport. Donald Trump‘s current approval rating is 42%. Interesting.

Boeing engineers are represented by the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA).

see:

SPEEA website:

Although if you think about it carefully, having the engineers represented by a union would make some aspects of the culture you complain about . . . worse.

CNN did a recent investigation on Silicon Valley's disparity of income. It's a good read/listen. Having lived in the valley, I support the unionization of gig workers at FB and GOOG and others. F*ck Zuckerberg.

Unions don’t work. Some of us realized that years ago, I invite the rest to join us.

Various Semi Co fab workers tried to unionize in Silicon Valley back in the mid- '80s but it never took hold and as I recall, Mgmt of these companies really pressed hard to not allow it to happen. I think the Intel BOD would react similarly today.

I have a feeling OP imagined it to be an all-white union. He probably didn‘t realize that the union would he dominated by Indians.

So next time Intel decides to outsource 200 jobs to India, the union would threaten a strike?

Yes, I am sure that would work. (That was a sarcastic comment, by the way)

Have a look at Germany with its supposedly powerful works councils. They are basically having zero real effect on the work quality of German employees. On the contrary, they are making many things difficult, and many employees and managers work around them. During ACT, did the works councils prevent one single layoff? Nope. Did they do anything about the unethical and potentially even illegal actions of HR in Germany? Nope. Did they do anything to prevent another site in Germany from being opened (for automotive) while people at existing sites got VSPs and ISPs? Nope.

The best thing I can say about the works councils in Germany? Before any kind of audit or security check, they always gave us 1-2 days of advance notice (they had to be informed by management). Yes, also unethical behaviour that should get people fired, but at least it was useful.

That gives you an idea of how effective a union would be.

Doubtful a union would ever work since their management is just a corrupt bunch of crooks. That's not to say this BoD and CEO management is not working either. Perhaps someone can innovate a new methodology to manage a company.
