Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Low morale

I think we can safely say that morale has hit an all time low at DeVry. I can't find one person who is

not forcing him or herself into coming to work every single day.

How sad is that? And how do those on top expect to see any improvements in results like this?

I'm pretty sure DeVry will not last much longer.

Left now writing a book about DeVry = It's simple - unethical leadership, unethical business practices and LOW academic discipline. DeVry's reputation is gone. Hopefully, with the new organization there is NEW leadership, NEW University name and academic standards. Best advice forward all emails that affect you personally you might need it for a EEOC complaint or a lawyer.

I am certain the issue is Greed

I do not blame Devry or the students but rather the availability of easy money to lend so students can borrow carelessly

If the banks check your ability to pay before giving you a loan why would the government offer a student loans before making sure you can attend college and you qualify for college?

this really depends in what department your in......admissions, student support, faculty, etc and pissed off students trying to add their 2 cents to this discussion board. when help someone from day 1 - to 4 years later at graduation, its a big deal.

Now, every degree doesn't promise you anything. you as a person and the history you have - adds to the value of the degree.

i have seen students, that have graduated from DVU, receiving a good amount of compensation for a first time job. Now, there is a ton of students.....failing, withdrawing, abusing title iv funding, abusing va funding, a non-stop of appeals to return to school over and over again. these are the students that always have always have something to say.......it don't matter if you go to a community college, state school or DV, you had issues before any enrollment interest. students now, what loans to forgiveness- why? because they feel "entitled" and sorry to burst the bubble - you are not. so get in debt like the rest of us and pay your loan and find a job.....if doesn't work in 6 -12 months, then you are doing something wrong, not the school.

ToCSqnJ-5xwa and others......here's a good article that addresses what is happening in higher education....at the center is that schools are no longer educating thinkers who have an awareness of the world and the people in it (because the humanities are no longer valued) and instead "training" workers to fit as cogs in the wheel of industry for the corporations who control everything :-( Good comparison made between what HMO's have done to healthcare and what the author terms "EMO's" and the impact on education :-( The section on faculty is dead-on!! It ALL makes me glad I'm retired!

To be fair, most education is overpriced these days. And a degree in art history, philosophy, or cultural studies from even a well-respected college isn’t going to get you much return on investment. You can go spend $200,000 for a useless piece of paper with a better brand name on it. I would hire a DeVry grad to do Network Admin in a heartbeat if they had passed their cert classes, and the overpriced history major would never get the callback. All of the money goes to administrators and campus improvements at your local State Podunk U. or Booteek Kollege. Precious little is spent on actually improving the process, but prices keep going up anyway. Where does the money go then? It’s not to faculty since we are all being replaced with standardized courses and adjuncts to run them. I’m sorry if your DVU students were worse than mine. We had a lot of military and community college students at my campus while it was open and they were eager to learn. Quite a few of them got jobs in their field.

The fault with all of this reasoning is that you think of College as job training. Money goes in, work skills and employability come out. If that’s what you want just send your kids to trade school. What about intellectual and cultural growth, broadening your horizons and engaging with deeper intellectual and literary concerns? That’s what College is supposed to be. There was a time when going to college meant that you had learned to think. Now people seem to only think of college as job training. That’s a mistake and a detriment to our culture and society.

@ToCSqnJ-4fvc so you saw them get a diploma. Big whoop. The point is that overpriced piece of paper isnt worth what these students pay. Apparently you have ignored what many students have said, that it didnt help most of them get better jobs or higher paying jobs. I can't tell you how many have said they wished they have never heard the name DeVry or went to another school. That they are buried in debt for overpriced mediocre education and it hasnt helped them. I had one admissions rep plainly tell me they tell applicants pretty much anything they think a person wants to hear to the point of promising the moon just to get a person to enroll. I worked as a registrar until i finally could get out of that rathole and into a respected institution. I would never recommend this "school" to anyone, not even my worst enemy.

4vxq--Who's happy at DVU? You? Then you are a fool. A fool being used to help mislead students into thinking they are earning a degree that will be worth something when and if they graduate. Glad you can sleep with your unethical self and that you are happy doing so.

"Helping students? What students? They don't show up. You can't help ghosts."

Right. Blaming the students now? Sounds like you are part of the problem. Try being part of the solution. You focus on being laid off... self fulfilling prophecy. And then you'll wonder why others remain happy in their jobs. I'm sure you will say they kissed butt to keep their job. Stop wasting everyone time and go find something new.

we all don't know the outcome of what is going on in background of DVU.

we hear rumors of the end, but what happens if its not the end.

of course, we have lay off - but that dosen't mean..."the end".

So, I will continue to come into work. Help our students, regardless of other employee low moral feelings. I have a purpose and until I'm let go............I will stop!

Well with an attitude like yours and your coworkers, it sounds like your office is doomed from the inside out. How about turning you focus on helping students instead of finding out how unhappy everyone is and perpetuating the misery.

Morale officially died about two years ago. everyone, and I mean everyone, at my campus is actively looking for new work. People have only stayed this long in hopes of a package on the way out the door. However, we all know no packages will be forthcoming. Only the rotten leaders who drove this place down will be getting their stock options And packages.
