We have hired at least 50 people in the last 4 months and only 2 are left. When they get here and find that there are no raises and no hours and too much stress they quit or just never show up again. How much money does it cost the company to hire someone with the drug test, background check, computer training etc? Must be losing tens of thousands per store just in hiring cost.
I've been wondering about that too, if they would close a store for the reason of not being able to attract and retain workers. We are hurting for workers and our store is maxed out because nobody is applying and those of that do work here are bidding farewell, myself included. But maybe Sears is not hurting "enough" because they're stil steadfast about not paying their employees competitively or giving us competitive benefits. They've just butchered vacation time for the few full time employees that do exist, and axed holiday pay too. Even the crappiest employers have holiday pay. Best Sears has to offer is a $50 sign on bonus for commission sales, after three months. Who is going to stick around that long for fifty bucks? Puh-leeze, give me a break!
@zlf Same at our Sears store. Everyone around us is paying $1 to $2 per hour more with no stress or pressure and more hours. What is going to close our Sears store and others is no one wants to work here. The word is out on Sears. Stay away.
Kohl's is hiring seasonal workers for back to school and to develop a pool of seasonal workers for the holidays. Smart move on their part. They also plan to keep some of the workers after back to school as regular employees. And by the way, they are starting these employees here in our part of California at $12.00 to $12.50 an hour depending on location.
Who wants to work for minimum pay and zero to 3 hours a week? You can make more money AND get more hours at a fast food restaurant.
My store can't get anybody to come in to apply, and if someone is hired, they usually don't stay. We've got open positions for softlines, appliances, tools, store support, soft lines supervisor and store support lead. Those positions have been open for months.
Oh, the Kmarts, or at least mine, are desperately trying to hire more people. It's just the total lack of hours and the maximum starting pay being minimum wage with no possibility of increase that kind of send everyone running away.

Why would they even bother? If anything they'll cut back even more hours and after the nightmare of this holiday season they'll shut down all stores.
