Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

June layoffs at Western Digital

Based on reliable source, there will be layoffs in June.

Is there any more info on this? When in June, how many, which departments?

Got the call that I’ve been laid off while getting ready for my vacation. Thanks WD, DM and ED! Worked there for 5 years and was the top performer in my team. However the new manager with zero management experience was groomed to take over. She was my peer and apparently saw me as a threat. Secretly meeting in the other bldgs, and promoted three levels! They lay off senior workers for new college grads likely to save overhead. It happened in my group.

Someone mentioned it looks like Hitachi & SanDisk bought WD. When WD bought HGST, the CEO of the combined company came from HGST. People at WD (Irvine) at the time wondered if WD bought HGST or the other way around! Then some of us read HGST was quietly building a new headquarters building in San Jose, so we knew HGST had taken over. Haha...With SanDisk, one way to look at it: if WD did not buy SanDisk, WD would still be a hard drive company. A clock would be ticking on its technology and existence, I suspect.

Good luck to our friends in Malaysia. Overseas layoffs don't get as much attention on these boards as US layoffs.

Multiple reorganizations in different areas of the company are a result of poor planning and leadership. Rampant cronyism in such a large organization.

Connect is useless, every time we hear about layoffs here first before connect. Connect gives the news after layoffs happen.

I was told that the sites in Marlborough (Massachusetts), Salt Lake City (Utah), and San Diego (California) will be closing permanently.

There were also lay-offs in Irvine (California).

from my experience, layoffs were likely to happen during the month April and September. I worked in the san jose office for ~3 years before i was asked to leave kindly. good thing i am still in my 20s and trying my best to look for a new job. still unemployed. but crossing my fingers somebody else will give me an opportunity.

I work at Dell in the MA area, but we just had some of the HGST engineers we work with get laid off. They were based out of the Marlboro office. Apparently that office is getting shut down.

Unfortunately, it was not a rumor. They have layoffs running in Irvine. Engineering, IT, marketing and analysts. I heard a complete team got layoff this morning and I got some of their goodbye messages.

Prev layoffs in Calif were in end Mar 2017. That's a good 15 months as of now that have gone by without any layoffs, that is good for all the employees.

years from WD employs side not from Hitachi and San Disk side.

I together with numerous others were laid off from HGST side, infact most HDD engineers let go were from HGST side. I am one such, happily employed elsewhere!

Rumor is next week across the board, but we all know HDD and Irvine will get hit the hardest. That's just the way the cookie crumbles. Sandisk is in, WD and HGST is out. Check the recent acquisitions targets to see the growth avenues.

I can't understand, every quarter layoff in past 4 years from WD employs side not from Hitachi and San Disk side. Looks like Hitachi and San Disk bought WD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no safety and any protection for WD employs side!!!!
