Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Bye Bye Server BU

I said in a post months ago this was going to happen, and here it is - either close up shop or sell it off.

Is Qualcomm really getting out of the server business? What with nxp deal's chances getting dimmer by the day and the promised diversity of business not materializing? Server is the only play they will be left with outside core mobile. Seems dumb to dump this just when they are ready to take off. It's only been few months since they announced their first chip. I am not Qualcomm employee, but an investor and to an outsider this all seems extremely stupid. To have invested so much time, money and talent to just get out without harvesting the fruit.

Qualcomm reconsider!

Reducing Intel profits was a nice side benefit but not the main goal. Increasing Q revenue in an attractive segment was primary goal. Yes, it was a challenge. No guts, no glory!

I have no proof of anything, and am mentioning this purely out of curiosity. Does anyone think there is scale back less for money savings, and more for privatization? Make it easier for the PJ buy out?

@1ojj They DID think that. It was mentioned by DB, the former VP of QDT, at his first Qcom wide presentation on server chips. I think was also mentioned in company all hands.

Q execs are f-ing retarded if they thought that.

I remember the executives saying one of the reasons they are working on server chips is that they want Intel to shift their resources away from mobile. The idea was that if Qcom took a small portion of the market away from Intel, Intel would put less money in mobile.

It’s not hard to be hugely better than garbage. Hydra and its variants were a disaster.

Performance, power, area and thermals were all vastly superior for the A73 core.

If RTP is such a great design center, answer this:

1) why were the CPUs designed out of all mobile SOCs?

2) why is the server project now confirmed to be shutdown or sold off?

Pivot back to CDMA

I know reading is hard if you work in RTP, but the poster said that RTP was kicked out of 8998. Therefore, it wasn’t designed in.

For those in the know - there was a plan to have an RTP processor in early days but it was remover after seeing how awful it was.

Plan to increase SAM to 150 billion, by selling server unit, focusing on mobile which is shrinking and buying back shares. Next will be to wind down PC compute efforts and focus further on modem. Brilliant Management :)

The writing was on the wall after RTP was kicked to the curb for 8998. Those POS processors were too big and hot for mobile.

So, they ‘pivoted’ to server and ran into a brick wall called Intel and AMD.

This clown show was was allowed to continue 2-3 years too long. It looks like SM finally woke up.
