Today is the day many of us have our exit interviews. I have mixed feelings right now. I have been ready for a change, but I'm leaving behind many friends.
I sincerely want to wish those affected good luck with today and your job search.

Most of the folks we’ve been interviewing are younger engineers.
To Truth Hurts...if you believe the “bottom 20%” were impacted then why does management still have a job. You are probably a dumb sh-- that voted white. From what I saw mainly employees over the age of 50 were impacted. Higher salaries but also employees with 20+ years who drove success.
H1b is mainly for cost savings nothing to do with specialized skillet or talent
This is true for most of the h1bs not all.
actually high attrition is good for middle / senior management as they are the only source of continuity, since attrition is low in San Diego, they simulate the same ..by randomizing people with some useless work, and layoff time to time ...
The attrition rate in India is a joke so most companies don’t want to deal with employees who can’t stay more than 3-6 months prior to moving on.
This is why most experience in India is hugely discounted. Low end projects.
OP is an idiot. People laid off outside SD are happy about it. Future packages will be worse. Wait for your bullet.
Qualcomm has QIPL, after the last layoffs they said no new hires, just move work to QIPL. This is all about greed of the top execs. They are the ones who were paying Apple off ($1B fine) while forcing the staff to watch Ethics training, oh, and don't forget the logo change. I am sure the execs got some nice bonuses and are laughing as they are able to steel RSU bonuses away from ex -employees. The new Qualcomm
IT is a tiny part of the company. Even if they shuttered the entire group life would go on.
This is about R&D not Cheeto covered IT guys.
It's not about producing, it's a change in corporate culture, IT is going to get simplified, all those special requests are going to be a thing in the past. Bare bones IT, not the Cadillac the Q has provided
A coworker and I were affected in 2015 in the team. My manager told me that they were not allowed to hire me back as consultant so they were forced to hire 8 Indians in BDC to replace two of us. A few months later, my manager was contacting me desperately looking for new hires since the hiring in BDC didn't work well due to turnover and performance. Heck they were so cheap!!
I said politely F.U. to my previous manager as I had moved out of SD.
I can see that Q continues down the toilet and outsourcing as never before. F.U. Q.
F U. It's all $ driven. Workers in San Diego cost way more than in India. It is a well known fact productivity per worker in India is about 1/3 of San Diego staff. Pay is 1/10th so the change is profitable for Qualcomm.
“Q losers being replaced by H1B indians”.
This is exactly my point. If “your” job can be performed by a semi-literate, minimum wage foreigner, you did not prepare to compete and succeed. You prepared only to participate... and this will not work out in your favor. Learn how to compete and how to win, or spend the rest of your life bad-mouthing those of is who do. Choice is yours.
@vqm Nonsense. There were mass firings also when the supposed „golden“ competitive generation was in charge. Take your nostalgia and stick it where it belongs. If you want to see what competitiveness does to companies, go to India.
Truth Hurts: you are right on the target. If people can’t produce what the employer needs, they will get axed. It really is as simple as that.
Root cause, at least in the USA, is that a whole generation of people has been taught how to participate, but not how to compete. And how to play, but not how to win. So they step out of their poppy fields one day into the real world with no useful survival skills.
So when business conditions change and budgets require adjusting, theses empty suits have no real value and no coping skills. So they come to boards like this and play the victim card.
As for me, I just stop in from time to time to see just how weak and entitled our workforce has become. Makes me glad my old man taught me how to thrive in the midst of pessimism.
There is no exit interview. You just sign possible unemployment and give them your badge. That’s it. No personal questions.
Don’t be bottom 20% at your next gig.
"UK and Cork only know that they may be losing their jobs and have to wait until next week"
It's not like they have it any worse than the USAsians. We were all in the same situation. How long did they tell everyone "we're reducing staff", and then refused to say how many? We were all on pins & needles for weeks!
At least the Europeans have a safety net. Not so in the US. You get laid off over here & you're pretty much on your own. Health insurance expires at the end of the month and it's nearly $1000/mo out-of-pocket to keep it. Unemployment benefits are a joke and won't even cover most rent payments for 30 days.
Be glad that you know you are in the know.

All I want to do is drop my sh-- and go back home to relax, I don't even want an exit interview. I always think Exit Interviews are how HR decides if you're eligible for re-hire. JUST GIMME' MY F---ING SEVERANCE CHECK AND GET OUT OF MY FACE ALREADY.
Oh sure, it's all about you..
Hey everybody, look at me, I gots an exit interview today!!
Hey buddy, dont blow the interview.
