Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Pay cut instead of layoffs

I would take a 20%-30% pay cut to save my job, since it’s been hella tough trying to get a new one ( three years on the market). They should give us that option before doing layoffs. It’s a much better choice than a 100% paycut.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with @SjMtG1B-1gqm. Few of my coworkers who were laid off over a year ago are still trying to find new employment. As far as I can tell, only one out of four of them managed to get a new job by now. That scares the hell out of me. And if given a chance between a pay cut and being laid off, I'm sad to admit I'd take it.

I remember in 2015, when we were all told there would be no more "overload" teaching--for some that meant a $20K reduction in salary, especially if we were accustomed to teaching 1 or 2 overload courses--but, then, classes were smaller. So, instead of capping classes at 20-25, they eliminated overload teaching and loaded 30, 35, and 40+ students into classes. Nice! And, our service requirements were endless and never applied to merit increases ("Oh, but X is your Job, as is Y, and Z")...I am so glad to out of their crooked poker game...

The 5 hour drive assignment is not surprising. In the Central area, many people are assigned to the Chicago campus and live almost 70 miles away. When it is questioned, or if one asks to be assigned to a closer to home campus, that person is labelled as a complainer in his/her review and down graded in that category. TZ refuses to hire any full or part time person to teach there. AK lets him get away with it! LH goes along with anything to keep being employed.

This really re-enforces the theory that TZ was promoted to get people to quit, so DeVry doesn't have to provide an exit package! Good work, Timmie!

Pray...who is LH?

While I think that you're correct, I wanted to put the idea out there in case management was listening in. I would rather have the choice to "ride out the teach out" that seems inevitable now for a few more years at a reduced salary so that I can keep pressing to find another job in the meantime. 70% of something is better than 100% of nothing. Yes, I don't think it will actually happen--people will just continue to be cut or not cut, until we're all finally cut and JB floats away into the sunset on his golden parachute. But I would be remiss if I didn't make the effort to put the idea out there.

It's not as far-fetched as you might think:

Belittling people at meetings fits the high school administration mentality. Finally makes sense!!

No one will be offered continued employment, if they'll accept a pay cut. You either will be or not be needed at all, at any level of pay. This isn't some kind of negotiation, trying to cut costs to keep the entity alive. That decision has already been made.

If it were possible to 'save' DeVry, it would have already been done. By ATGE.

I've always wondered why he was on staff. I mean, what skills can a former assistant high school principal bring to this level? Hall monitoring? Detention slip dispenser? Institutional hammer? Inappropriate at the university level...intimidation doesn't work. Some people just don't scare. And, if you can't impress through character, or inspire through leadership, or even intimidate by threatening reprisals...then what good are you?

Unfortunately I think most studies point out that pay cuts are the less preferred option. Especially with many people already living paycheck to paycheck.

the expectation that I'd drive to and from a campus in another state (5 hours 2x/week).

...Huh? Why would you expect to do that--aren't there employees there?

Smx.Jpf2-sxh:

That was my position: I was a few months shy of full retirement age, but, I'd so had it with the company, the way I was treated--the expectation that I'd drive to and from a campus in another state (5 hours 2x/week)....endless new tech tossed at us, endless service requirements...disrespect, insincere, heartless managers...I retired 6 months early--and it will cost me. But it was worth it!

Many were forced into early retirement.....a retirement NOT as secure as what might have been "planned" :-( Can be both challenging and depressing, but the freedom from an oppressive organization makes up for it with less stress and a retrieved sense of integrity :-) Wishing everyone the best journey possible and gentle landings!
