Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What is the future of Server (QDT)- layoff/spinoff/selloff? Any thoughts?

I am hearing server HC impact has been postponed till the current project finishes (around Oct/Nov).

The fate will be decided by server chip customers or traction that time. If no customer then no server HC can be justified. I personally don't think all server HC (huge number) will be laid off. There is a high probability of selling to someone - but who will buy?

Any folks here know or guess what is the plan for data center.

No BS please if you have any self-respect that I'd expect if you are working in Qualcomm.

@2nzo not sure which world are you in..atleast in my world there ARE off the shelf ARM servers..

This is the problem with Qcom..they think they are ONLY ones making cool things..but reality is they are really playing catch up...late in most of new technologies..but stick their nose in something they are not capable of...the old qcom which i loved isn;t there anymore..there's a reason that Hock said you are overvalued..

@1yna Firetail is meant for supporting dual socket mostly. The is no off the shelf ARM cpu for server in market yet.

@1brh you were talking about always connected PC, that is a sh--ty snapdragon soc inside a PC, not QDT server cpu.

The loss of Google should be a harbinger of things to come. Wonder how they will spin this in the upcoming all hands to keep people working on Firetail, with big layoffs hanging over their head once Oct/Nov comes around

I really doubt Firetail will get better performance/efficiency than a competitor server product made out of Ares+Porter ARM IP products . And if that is the case , I'm not sure how management can justify having a $250+ (?) million center when they can just instead buy off-the-shelf ARM CPU products for cheap.

I'd bet the San Diego execs already now this is the case, so Raleigh CPU team will disappear or re-orged (similar to the mobile cpu side).

@1brh - Assume you are from product side.

Before commenting here, have you read the reviews on the laptops powered by snapdragon ?

Clearly, need work on product team and vision.

This is all BS. I work in PM, the follow-on project "Moonshine" is already approved by the board, and will save the company with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon.

We don't need the fruit company, after Moonshine, we have project Tequila that will save us on the laptops, as Dell, HP and Lenovo replace Intel with Snapdragons!

I heard QDC 1000 people will be gone at the end of year.

Nothing will happen this year. Firetail is under development and is do-or-die for QDT. AFAIK that will commercialize next. Project will fold if the chip is not successful anyways. Too much investment to not wait for another year.
