They don't have to give anyone a thing! What you will get is that "pink" slip without a severance package that some of us were lucky to get!
This is a huge worry of mine. I've read that it often happens that a company decides to have a layoff right before bonuses are paid out, to ensure additional savings. Motivate workers to give their all until the last day, and then show them the door without having to honor some of the obligations. Hopefully this will not happen, but something tells me it's a likely outcome.
