Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

Teradata Hiring Discrimination Against Black Americans

Interviewed in San Diego back in March of this year and also went to the San Francisco Bay area to meet with some people. At the same time a Caucasian friend with lesser skills also interviewed. We planned this because we had heard that Teradata HR and management discriminates against Black Americans. And, we wanted to see if discrimination was still alive at Teradata. Well it is. He was hired as a permanent employee and I was hired as a contract employee with Level 1 access. But my contract has to be renewed every 3 months. I have watched people get hired all around me.

Sure people are getting laid off but people are being hired also. We were hoping that our findings would be different with Teradata since we have several good friends working here. We are testing other organizations with our controlled group and will bring lawsuits against all these companies. Of course, this will not be the first time that Teradata has been to court for violating the Federal Anti-Discrimination Laws: Title VII.

Last Minute Update: Just about to hit submit and someone on our video call stated that Teradata is replacing American workers with people in the Philippines. I guess the work of our team will have to expand to see if this is true because that means Teradata may be struggling financially.

I am a black woman and was hired by Teradata straight out of college along with several others on my team. We were trained together and I always received 'exceeds expectations' ratings. There was a team that needed several people with the skills we had and our boss felt that this would be a great promotional opportunity for a few of us. Myself and two white males took the job. We were all trained together and we friends outside the company as well because we were always told that the 3 of us had great futures ahead. We were excited for the opportunity. When we got there (it was a relocation position). My two counterparts jumped right into their new job while I was given menial tasks. When I asked why I was doing a lot of data entry instead of analysis, I was told that "I had to prove myself first" and then I would be given more complex assignments. I was totally taken aback and actually had to go to the restroom to shed a few tears. I called my 'old' boss and told him what was said and he was floored and then got me the hell out of that position.

Was it because I was black or maybe because I was female - I don't know. But I do know that I was judged based upon something that had nothing to do with my capabilities. As soon as an outside opportunity came, I got the hell out of Teradata and have steadily climbed up the ranks within my new company.

Those of you who immediately state that someone who feels discriminated against is 'just bitter', well, I just hope you never experience the hurt I felt because someone judged me without merit.

Yup, I'm still hanging in here and been given more responsibility (overloaded) due to some cuts. Things turning around for the better after this posting and after the firing and demotion of certain guys. For sake of my buddies here I'm trying to become more optimistic bout org's future and employee relations. Optimistic or not it's a proven fact that if a company is not growing, it's dying.

I'm OP and not troll as some guy (or gal) stated.

Think OP a troll? If so it makes all here a troll. Only see a couple helpful posts in past year. What untruth did OP write making them troll? What OP say seem to get under a lot people skin. Why is that if not true?

I don't buy this at all. Sounds like complete BS, a grudge, a chip on the shoulder, a victim attitude. Sad. Having said this, being a protected classes (and I am one myself) actually hinders your chances. But not b/c of discrimination but due to financial and litigation risk.

What a load of BS. Are there protected classes? Damn right there are and that's according to the federal government, including the Supreme Court.

Protected classes are characteristics a person has that cannot be the reason for discrimination or harassment. The federal protected classes are race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, disability, genetic information and veteran status. I'm not sure if LGBTQ are a protected class at this time.

If you don't think discrimination happens, you're living with your head in a hole in the ground.

Being prepared does not guarantee success. Training, education and experience gets one's foot in the door. One still must successully sell oneself. Anyone thinking preparedness generates a right to success suffers an acute case of entitlement mentality, and is doomed to failure. Discrimination is a factor only to the point that confused people tend to reveal their confusion and are not hired as a result.

The entitlement mentality would me that they are expecting something that they have not earned the right to have, correct? That is not what this thread is about. It about having earned the right, done all the right things to get educated and trained in that profession and then being denied the opportunity because of age, race or other prejudices. Why call them brittle snowflake (term used to describe extremist liberals or extremely fragile individual)? I did not read anything about weakness or fragility in this thread. I did read a couple of critics with rude comments.

Why would a person call them a bitter black person with no skills and bad attitude. That is pretty discriminatory statement within itself and that line of thought came from an angry person.

If you are making rude comments here against the person that started this thread, then you are the real snowflake; someone who has never faced any real adversity in life and therefore is easily upset by anything contradictory to your narrow views.

This entire thread reeks of entitlement mentality. There are protected classes of people? Really? If one feels discriminated against then they've been discriminated against? But that reality would be so simple. Sounds like TD has been infiltrated by brittle snowflakes and is rotting from within.

don't wait for his case to go to court. if you have a lot of people in bay area, just do your own case. there's many case against Teradata like the civil rights cases of belsole vs teradata corp. or hughes vs teradata corp. or https://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/news/2017/04/11/teradata-pays-hefty-settlement-to-fired-co.html and many more. just make sure you don't sign away your right to sue.

My girlfriend is a teradata temp - she hates it when I call here a temp. She's african american, passionate 'bout her temp job, got to work remote and she has a upbeat attitude bout her managers and coworkers. Never hear her complaining about race issues. IMO agree that the poster is bitter about something.

It's "hardened heart" ... and I agree that person is in denial and evil for attacking the poster.

True that you do not see a lot of black folks at Teradata. People should be able to speak of race and discrimination without people thinking people are bitter. That person that called a person bitter is the one that is bitter with a heartened heart. They must be one of the "old white men" that are running the company. Talking about the ignorant post @QP2m5x3-1mgd.

@QP2m5x3-1mgd if you had read it with your mind and not your negative attitude, you would have seen that I am not in it for the job itself. I was born with a silver spoon and my only goal is to right some wrongs. Your attitude proves that I am on the right track. Only a person in denial would take offense.

You sound like a bitter black person since you did not get the permanent job. Get some skills and improve your attitude.

Not everything in life is determined by skin color

Come to think of it, not a lot of black folk I can recall globally, Teradata is certainly not a diverse employer, handful of women in the LT and no ethnics. Definitely an old white man run company, which is ok if they were any good!

More of us should band together to fight all types of wrongful terminations and hiring practices. Keep up the good work and I will keep an eye out for the lawsuit. May have a few other people (non-Black but of a protected class) in the Bay Area that can join the suit.
