Does anybody know what kind of criteria is used by Seagate when determining who will be laid off? I am assuming performance assessment is one, but what about last in first out system? I am relatively new to the company, so this is something that can affect me greatly. Any info would be appreciated.

I am not a manager, and can only observe.
It is not only FIFO. FIFO may okay a role of no other factors come into play.
I suspect personally conflicts, especially if complaints are pushed upwards, get both people canned.
Large initiatives also get eliminated, taking all with it.
An age balancing also happens for above and below 40.
Lots of factors one cannot control, and a few that one can.
Good luck.

-czas In my state you have to submit a breakdown of the age of those impacted by a RIF. Any abnormal weighting to older is closely examined for age discrimination, which Seagate had already been targeted for lawsuits in the past. You are either lying, or lumping in total depts who were eliminated.
I strongly disagree that age is NOT a factor. 72% of my VP's list was for people - OVER 40 - years of age. Let that sink in.
As someone who made multiple lists I picked people only how supportive they were. F--- age, s-x, experience, education. Can you help my team continue our mission? If no, buh bye.
Managers and directors have no access to micro survey results.
Criteria for layoffs, at least for my team is "least impact to the company".
We were told a certain % to cut and have to submit a list up to the % asked.
New guys were more often on the list because they have less responsibilities and know less. Old ones probably due to attitude issues.
I was a manager.
Age? I think it's not. High paid old guys survived from one of closed design center. Young guys got laid off without any pre notice. So age is not important factor.
Company has 'Core employees' list. If company interests to your role and projects, then you have more possibility to survive. But Layoff criteria are non objective. There's possibility to choose a someone who friendly to managers. You can get laid off not related with R&R, if your manager is A-- hole.
Anyway HDD industry is going down fast.
Age might be one of the factors, most likely if your manager likes you or u can prove to be asset to the team, you will not be affects
Have seen young engineers working less than half a year and affected by the RIF as well
So my opinion, will be try to get out as soon as possible, like what some writers had said here, its a sunset industry
If you're in your fifties and still and engineer, the chances of being laid off increase.
I like how the person commenting below me is basically saying be Seagate's b--ch and work overtime if you don't want to lose your job.
I'd rather get laid off. You keep bending over for them though. Hopefully they use atleast a little lube.
By the way, I've survived about 15-20 layoffs at Seagate so far with this strategy. Whatever you do, do not complain about too much work. Just explain what your priorities are for getting things done and take your time doing good work even if it's late.
If they decide to eliminate your specific function you will get laid off regardless of performance. That provides good legal protection as long as your position remains gone for a long period. Other than that personal politics is a large factor. Directors have enormous latitude to add anyone to the list. You can know you are being set up for elimination if you find everyone else is being assigned to the major projects and your work is limited to a small project. Boom, the project(s) can be eliminated with your job. and give legal cover. You can feel much better if you are assigned to major products or projects and have a lot going on and you seem overworked. Also, never complain about too much tasks and when asked claim you'd like to own everything. figure out how best to manage it. From what I've seen that's how they do it.
If you are a non American, on H1B, getting more than average salary, you are likely to be laid off. If American is fired he might file law suit, so easy to fire h1bs. Companies scared of Trump.
It's more like FIFO. Seagate is concerned more on averaged age is higher than industry. In the past few years, I did not see any new grad got canned. Of course, kissing upper management azz is super important too.
I've heard they use those surveys. When they ask if you believe in the executive managements vision or if seagate is focusing on its people, and you answer 'strongly disagree' you can expect your name to be on the layoff list.
