Thread regarding Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) layoffs

At HPE, the Pirates Parrot the Parrots!

At HPE, the pirates parrot the parrots! HPE discriminates, not only against older folks, but also, HP discriminates against decent and ethical folks! Won’t play dog-eat-dog? Prepare to be laid off!

HPE employees are so fearful of layoffs… And HPE uses “forced distribution reviews”… Such that, in order to keep your job, you have to make others look bad, and almost everyone knows it. I have sat in a weekly staff meeting where one co-worker savaged a missing co-worker, and all that the boss said, was along these lines: “Well, I am glad that we seem to feel free to speak out minds here”.

It’s like this here political cartoon (Can someone please draw it up?): The boss is a jolly old peg-legged pirate, lurching around the ship. On his shoulder, there is an angry, aggressive parrot, squawking (in large bold letters), “Awwwk! Awwwk! Poly wants a cracker, co-workers are slackers! Awwwk! Awwwk!” Pirate meekly hangs head, repeats, in small, submissive script, “Awwwk! Awwwk! Poly wants a cracker, co-workers are slackers! Awwwk! Awwwk!” …

Lazy managers (who have neither the time nor the competence to look over your shoulder and watch, let alone help, as you write code or run technical hardware), will just take the word of your team leader, or other favored team member, when writing your review. So what we have is a plain and simple conflict of interest, where team leaders or other favored workers can get themselves a better review, by bad-mouthing you. So then… “The pirate (supposed leader) parrots the parrots”, not vice versa. And “Poly’s cracker” is getting to keep Poly’s job, while Poly’s victims lose theirs.

If I were The Meggot I would…

Ditch the “forced ranking” performance reviews. If you can’t bring yourself to do that, at least eliminate what is clearly a conflict of interests that is taking place here. Teach your pirates and parrots that leaders are supposed to lead, and followers are supposed to follow. Start leading; that’s what you’re paid for.

"HPE employees are so fearful of layoffs"... LOL. Clearly not, as none of them will leave despite the fact unemployment is at 4%. The fact is they are laid off because they have no value, otherwise they'd have left years ago. Why else would anyone stay and work in fear?

I too was bad mouthed behind my back, eventually got laid off, collected my severance and subsequently retired with a pension. If the company had just waited 6 more months I would have retired and they could have kept the 6 months severance payout. The joke was on them.

“How come you didn't sue for defamation?”

Because lawyers charge a LOT of money, and/or, will not take your case unless there’s a VERY good chance that you will win! AND because there’s no sense in suing anyone who lacks “deep pockets” (lots of money). “You can’t get blood out of a rock”. Sue your trash-talking co-workers who have very little money? Good luck! Sue HPE for that? Good luck! HPE will just say, “That was our employee, not us, doing the trash-talking”. Case dismissed!

Complain to the management? Might work sometimes, but again, good luck… Often it is the exact same lazy management (too lazy to investigate in any depth) and technically incompetent management (too ignorant to tell the difference between a technically competent employee, v/s the trash-talkers). And management is under constant pressure to find scapegoats to be laid off (especially older scapegoats). So… Good luck with that!

But this does bring up the following observation: There is a HUGE difference between the prevalent college attitudes today, of “safe spaces”, and running to “Mommy-Daddy” (the college administration), every time one’s baby feelings are hurt, v/s what happens in corporate America today… Certainly at the very least, at HPE! There are NO “safe spaces” at HPE, and management is certainly NOT concerned about your career prospects, let alone your baby feelings!

If you older people “out there” are close to any college students or recent grads, who just might listen, PLEASE let them know that they’re in for some very rude shocks in corporate America today! There are NO “safe spaces” here!

I agree with this assessment (Favoritism is all I saw at HPE and people talking bad behind your back after they learn from you). I was truly undermined and the person who undermined me got the credit for the work, plus being micro-managed by that same co-workers was astounding and shocking that someone will go to that low-level after you shared your knowledge and then they take credit for it and that same person watches over your shoulder on what you are doing. I have not run into this in a very long time. Maybe it was a good thing that I was laid off - I probably would not been able to take it much longer. :-(
