Thread regarding Altice USA (Cablevision) layoffs

Why Do Unions Push The Idea Of "Seniority" In Labor Contracts? To Most Of You..... IT DOESN'T SOUND FAIR.

The idea of "seniority" is being used RIGHT NOW in ATS (Cablevision)... and there are no complaints about it.

Isn't "seniority" being used to determine free cable for those who stay with the company for 20 or more years?

20 years..... receive 10-year cable benefit after retirement

25 years..... receive 15-year cable benefit after retirement

30 plus....... lifetime benefit

Is seniority being applied here? Of course, it is. And why start at 20? Why not 15.... or maybe 10?

How about vacation time? Why is that any different? The longer you stay with a company, the longer your vacation time. All companies do the samet. Again, determined by "seniority".

How about starting pay for new hires? Why are new hires paid less than what you're currently earning? Does that sound fair to you? After all, he's performing the same job and task as you are. Except you've been with the company a number of years and earning more. Hmmm.... sounds like "seniority" to me.

And then there are the arguments about promotions.

First of all, I have posted links to 3 samples, but real, union contracts, so that YOU can check this "issue" for yourself. But I assume you've been too busy, or you just "don't feel like" reading them. That's fine. I, totally get it.

All three union contracts give the company the responsibility on WHO gets the promotion, based on the recipient being able to perform the job. PERIOD. Anyone may apply for any position that the company puts out. All who apply MUST BE ABLE to perform what the promotion, or new position describes. And if all candidates are equal in skill or talent, needed for that position, then YES, "seniority" comes to play. He gets and deserves the shot. But that DOES NOT give him automatic passage into OSP if he clearly doesn't understand the workings of an RF trunk, despite spending multiple years in Dispatch. (no offense intended).

So, if it still sounds like favoritism to you, then ask the retiree why he doesn't deserve the 15-year cable benefit instead of the 10-year. Or, how about waiting on line for the door to open on Black Friday? Weren't those closest to the door the ones who were there the longest? Isn't that "seniority"?

If the economy goes in the toilet and the company needs to lay off employees, then YES, it is based on "seniority". And the reason is simple and basic. Companies WITHOUT unions will lay-off redundant or high-salary employees first. Just ask those who were in management what Altice did to them. And it is also a way for companies to keep or hire lower paid talent as your replacement.

Perhaps the company is tired of you bringing up vital issues and sees you as a threat. And uses the term "lay-off" as the reason for letting you go. And maybe that is why most of you will remain quiet when something is wrong. The fear of a bogus "lay-off" looms over your head.

If business picks up and the company wants to rehire... guess who gets recalled first? You got it.

Now you see why unions make this into a big deal. And companies despise it. They hate the fact that their hands are tied. They do not have 100% control. It becomes the itch that is in an area they cannot reach.

So, think clearly and weigh all factors, fellas

More importantly.... don't let this issue be THE deciding factor.

College fella you should be smart enough to know in life there is PROS N CONS in everything. Right know you just need to do your own research and make the best decision for you " unless u live at home with mommy n daddy" then u won't care as much as if you had your own family. Why would u not want to preserve what u already have? Do you like them taking away things from you? A union will help preserve that with a voice.

I'm a college graduate, and a cable tech. I just prefer hands on work. Does having that college experience make me any less a tech than anybody else, 1rzl? You don't know me, or the quality of my work. I'm not here to create any kind of divide between anybody who went to college or didn't. I didn't agree with the college requirement for new hires a few years ago because I thought it eliminated many guys who were both qualified and willing to work. While there is some truth in that guys with some college won't want to do field work, there are those of us who do. And of I have to be the noisy one to make the statement, so be it.

I'm a cable tech, and a college graduate. As I have from my auto mechanic past (probably giving away my identity, at least to my shop) to any install, tc, or cos today, I stand behind my work. Go qc me. Ill wait.

@MmW3c4V-1gme <------- college educated but not union educated

you and many like you continue to fail at understanding the simple phrase "strength in numbers". They're plenty of examples of this throughout the history of America's unions.

you said "They cannot negotiate a way for techs to get more than the Brooklyn contract." Do you think this would be the case if more and more shops unionize ??

Your realistic view falls short of mentioning the fact that we are aiming to (at the very least) protect what we currently have. Can you honestly say that you feel 100% secure in your current AT-WILL status?

you're certainly entitled to your point of view, but you really should utilize your college education and learn more about how unions work and how it benefits employees.

Yes, I went to college. Yes, I've received an education. Why would anyone be proud of being an ignorant f**k. Why would anyone join a union where the spokesmen can't form sentences in English and are proud of being uneducated?

As you can see from the below comments, my point is made. Good luck to those who believe that gentlemen like these are the right ones. Idiots...

  1. You're - a conjunction of 'you' and 'are'

  2. Doesn't - a conjunction of 'does' and 'not'

  3. Sentences begin with capitalized letters

  4. Troll - One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers.

College has prepared me to make educated decisions regarding my future. It also allows me to offer my views objectively without name calling or resorting to base analogies such as sheep or wolves or other commonly used union organizing language. I'm not a corporate "troll" as I'm not here to start an argument. I'm here to state an educated opinion. The costs of benefits are not directly controlled by the company. They only determine how much or the rising costs they will absorb each year. What we receive for what we pay compared to other industries is outstanding. The union promises are not based on reality. They cannot negotiate a way for techs to get more than the Brooklyn contract. Arbitration will not allow more than parity and that level has already been set. In addition to this, the number of techs or shops do not make a difference on this outcome. The company is always negotiating from a position of strength. The union representatives will accept major conecessions in order to get a contract that seems like a win. Do not kid yourselves, it won't be. It will be exactly the same situation as Brooklyn. You will be locked into a situation where you as an individual will have no say, waiting for your turn on the seniority ladder with meager wage increases. Your job function will eventually be eliminated by the growth in fiber and you will be jobless. The union cannot protect you from this ending.

This is a realistic view of how things will be. I will stop now and let the union organizers pick apart my post by using slogans and referencing other websites and say I'm corporate. They are wrong on all counts. I'm an actual tech, educated on the realities of both unions and Altice plans, and the statement I've made are facts. I really hope everyone does what's best for their family and themselves.

Brooklyn and Oakland have paved the way for the rest of the footprint. We all need to unionize so we eventually can have more bargaining power and give ourselves an opportunity to secure a much better work environment than what we have right now.

need to stop with these incredibly ignorant statements like "They'll get the same contract as Brooklyn" and "There is no lifetime cable benefit. Hasn't been for years."

If we're really concerned about our future employment here, we need to stop the foolishness and start working together.

In response to the poster below who states that a lifetime cable package is no longer instituted, here's the information from your Marquee EXACTLY....

JSI Multiline Static, IP Ping Tools, HHC, ETAdirect, NYC1 - ServAssure Marquee, ConnWestl, - ServAssure Advanced Tec-Trac, Tec-Trac

Employee Product Benefit Eligibility and Related Guidelines

Upon retirement from the company, Cablevision employees with significant years or consecutive service may be eligible to continue their employee product benefit.

• Eligibility for the employee product benefit is as follows based on retirement date and consecutive years of service:

20 consecutive years with the company 10-year cable benefit upon retirement

25 consecutive years with the company 15-year cable benefit upon retirement

30+ consecutive years with the company Lifetime cable benefit

• The off system cable allowance is discontinued

• Retirees must confirm annually that they still reside at address where benefit is provide

• If an employee moves from "off system" to an area within the footprint, he/she is eligible to receive the benefit for remaining period of eligibility.

• You are eligible to receive the retiree product benefit that is in effect at the time of your separation, so long as Cablevision continues to provide such services to its then current employees.

• This complimentary service will begin on the date of retirement (separation) and extend for the eligible years noted above from that retirement date, provided eligibility is maintained.

• The retiree product benefit cannot be transferred to another person and must be used in the home within our service area where you personally reside.

• Your local HR representative will coordinate your retiree benefit services with Corporate Human Resources and Employee Accounts. Your account will be noted accordingly.

• Please note that Cablevision may eliminate or modify these services at its sole discretion at any time.

Death of Employee:

In the event that a current employee passes away, family members residing with the employee are entitled to the applicable Employee Product Benefit for six months. In the event a retired employee passes away, the applicable Employee Product Benefit is discontinued.

These guidelines do not apply to employees in Brooklyn covered by a collective bargaining relationship. In addition, these guidelines do not apply to employees at Newsday Media Group or the Ziegfeld.

So, if the information is WRONG, from the company's website, then either it should be corrected, or it is there to deceive, or someone is not doing their job. And as an employee of ATS, ask yourself if there is anything else on the Marquee that is false.

PICK YOUR POISON.

I didn't create the website.

@MmW3c4V-1gke, I think you meant you can't ask for more than has been negotiated. You know nothing about unions. Nothing has been negotiated. The only thing that has been negotiated is for Brooklyn under the CWA. Oakland is under the IBEW and don't automatically get what Brooklyn gets. Altice has to now negotiate with the IBEW.

Your friends from college are on mommy and daddy plan and your on the low end of the pay scale by which means you either pan nothing or close to nothing. If you call this a phenomenal plan then you need to look around and do a little more research.

There is no lifetime cable benefit. Hasn't been for years. Medical benfits are actually phenomenal. I do pay a bit for the but they're great. Especially when compared to most of my friends from college. And Oakland and Newark are not "big ships" that'll bring the company to their knees. They'll get the same contract as Brooklyn. You can ask for more than has already been negotiated. It's already set as market value. Not a tech btw

It's funny how you corporate trolls want to compare everything to Brooklyn. Let's see what happens if Newark unionizes. Three big ships and then you'll see more fall in line. Lets see how you compare to Brooklyn then.

Some of my friends have better coverage some have worse. You can honestly say that's the best they could've done? A lot was taken away from us. Had the health coverage improved, then I can say they put that money towards our best interest. Instead all that slashing did was to line the pockets of others.

Brooklyn lost that too and they have a contract. WE do not pay out the arse for health care. Go ask some of your friends what they pay. Also not management

Was it fair to takeaway our holiday bonuses?

Was if fair to take away our sick time?

Was it fair to take away our holiday?

Is it fair that we are paying out our azzes for healthcare?

Is it fair for us to pay for voice services when it cost the company nothing?

Was it fair we had to use up most our vacation time or loose it?

Was it fair that less is being invested in our retirement?

This list goes on....

And just to add this.

Concerning promotions or job opportunities, a union member can file a "grievance" with the union if he felt the decision was unjust. The union, representing YOU, confronts the company to show cause.

In other words, prove why he didn't deserve it.
