Everyone is going to have a different situation..

I asked for 1 day... a single day... after the new policy starts, and I was addressed in a passive aggressive manner and told "fine! But I need to know where you are..."

wtf for? Am I 15??? I hate it. I'd rather be able to submit my time through a system, and if it gets denied have a good reason rather than "my boss was in a bad mood and decided to be an a$$"... I decided not to take the day after all, and am debating on whether to take the vacation I had scheduled this summer (assuming I still have a job) just because I don't feel like being treated like a effin teenager...

Well, maybe I'm alone, but I like it. For one, I'm pretty sure that it saves Seagate, "book/debt/accounting" money. So, that's good, for all. Continuing... I'll receive a check for the vacation that I'm owed, and that's fair. Then I'll take my 4-5 weeks (which was previously reduced from 5 to 4), when I want. I won't be told when to take that time and I'm positive that my boss won't block anything. If I'm given new restrictive rules, I'll push back. If one would attempt 6 - 10 weeks off, there will be questions, and there should be. Take your reasonable time off and don't abuse the system. Seems simple enough. But, I guess everyone's situation is different.

I like it as it was introduced at your competitor around 1-2 years ago, where I work. Before there were all the forced shutdowns, that there was no time left to take holiday when one needed it, such as visiting my parents abroad, when they were ill, but instead having forced shutdown during 4 July week, thanksgiving or New Year, when even sometimes the children still went to school. No more shut-down and one takes holiday, when one needs it. It is much better.

Gee, because young hip companies screw employees over, this is a great idea for Seagate as well. What other means can Seagate come up with to pretend to be with the times, while boosting the payouts to the executives?

Wow you are all old farts. This is a great idea that many start ups and large companies like Facebook do. It takes cash off the books to make the company better, it doesnt change an honest employee from still requesting and working with their boss for some vacation. The only people who should fear it are those that abuse it and always take time off letting their job performance drop. Worse case for the company is too many people abuse and their management are too pu--y to call them out for the drop in performance. Everyone at STX gets magical 3. I bet this starts bringing in some 2's and 1's to the table. BTW we get our vacation in cash soon, so win win little b--ches.

I bet there will be no more December furloughs (3 day, or sometimes 6 day, "required time off" vacation burners).

Its just a way to avoid paying for accrued vacation when they get around to laying you off.

So , you mean you no longer accrue vacation, but have to request time off? Is that what they mean by unlimited vacation? What happens to your current vacation hours? Does this affect hourly or salary workers or both?

Perhaps their next step will be to pay you a lump sum and let you buy your own insurance.

Remember, its easier to land a new job while you still have a job.

Feel sorry for you guys. In the UK it is employment law that a company has to give you a minimum 5.6 weeks (28 DAYS) paid annual vacation.

basicsally all your vacation is stolen away and you will Not be allowed to take time off like you may think. There will always be a business reason to say no because vacation by definition costs the business

It's not Unlimited vacation, it's Flexible Time Off. So everyone will have 52 weeks per year of vacation now.

Just one more way for the company to f--- you.

Seagate is not legally required to give you a single day off now. Let that sink in.

Since the most cynical response is almost always correct, I think they did this in preparation for more layoffs. When the layoffs are done, they may return to the old way due and call it a failed experiment. This company is driven by greed 100%. Not care for employees and customers. Never forget that.

I think it s---s. Before you had designated time to use as you will. Now you need to justify every vacation to your manager. You can wonder what impact each request has on your performance review.

Some will benefit but overall I think that it is a way to work people harder. Oh, you want to take off next month... guess you're gonna have to pull a lot of long days and weekends to make that happen.

Anyone who thinks there is now unlimited vacation is either delusional or has a cozy relationship with a manager and no deliverables.

Departments do it at a cost to other departments. Avnet Chandler offers it to their salary departments while treating hourly like slaves, they call it Slavenet ! One of their departments that design carrier boards for eval purposes in Chandler has it and they are one the most expensive wastes, that department can easily be outsourced to asia. Some folks live like kings while others are ran like machines.
