I'm a grade 8 in Santa Clara, PhD in EECS with 10 years exp. Struggling to make it to grade 9 in this bad climate. Been with Intel for 5 years.
Salary = 145k + geo 8%
APB target = 5k
What quartile am I in? What is the salary range for grade 8 in bay area? Someone said that my manager is low balling me. Do you think this is true?

Your $145K is solid as a few legit folks have mentioned. What's not so good is your EB (APB) target. Hopefully you have a recent SL2 or EE/O or, as others have mentioned... it might be time to start looking.
Lower end new Grade 8 here $110k that should give OP an idea.

Want to get promoted ? Forget about your credentials or merit..... invest in some knee pads and start s---ing up.... 95% + of the people I see getting promotions are manager's favorites.
G8 equiv positions at places like Apple, google are $250k+. Go shop around some to check your actual value, you're paying a premium to be at Intel.
I think that is on the high side for grade 8. 5 years is not so bad. I have heard you have to get multiple exceeds or outstandings to get promoted. Some people I know ever since I started was always at grade 7
you are on high side of gr8 if u make 145k base not accounting for geo. my guess is top quartile

If five years at intel all at GR8 you could be stalked out and ripe for next VSP.
You get any consecutive years of E/O and commensurate stock L1/L2? If you aren't carrying an E/O last year and same this year highly unlikely you will get the promo. I'd leave as intel stock and compensation are just average and the company is going to sink! It is like the Titanic he captain has ignored all warning and already hit the iceberg. "It will certainly sink"

Check 'Workday'. It will show your current salary, Grade Level quartiles and all.
Your direct that you report to knows what quartile you are in, just ask or schedule a 1:1 to discuss.
