Thread regarding Altice USA (Cablevision) layoffs

Can someone summarize for me what's going on?

A fellow VZ union worker here - I am not completely tracking as it relates to what's going on on the Union front. Thank you and good luck!

@verizon fios tech in nj

While I fully agree with you, no Verizon employee has had to deal with someone like a B@rry Monopoly. This man has successfully managed to keep the union out for over 25+ years. He's a wolf in wolf's clothing. Fear and intimidation is his weapon of choice. Just when everyone thought he had retired, BOOM! he rears his ugly head as ATS front man.

ATS main objective is to lure techs over to new company using deceptive incentive plan so they can do with them as they wish later on down the road.

Best chance we all had to unionize was in 2012 soon after Brooklyn voted in CWA. But, CEO Dolan opened up his checkbook and issued unprecedented wage increases across the company to stamp out any and all unionizing drives.

here we are 5 years later under a new owner who has every intention of getting rid of all us and we are still massively divided. By the time we actually unite, it'll be too late!

While no union is perfect , without a doubt my family and myself are in a much better place that I have a union contract and representation.

As you guys know we went on strike this past year. The main reason we went on strike was Verizon wanted "give backs" during negotiations. Their claim was that the competition was doing it cheaper and we had to be in line with Cablevision and Comcast pay and benefits . This fact was true , ,but we still had the power to negotiate instead of just excepting what Verizon wanted. Unfortunately, the techs in Piscataway and the Bronx will have to except whatever the company wants ,Ats, lower pay, ...Which in turn makes it harder for us over here at Verizon as union represented techs.

This is an out of control race to the bottom. And you guys are winning this race hands down. I do understand your fear ,but at what point do you say enough is enough.

Remember ,economical it's in the best interest for the company to keep you non-union at all cost. But just don't sit there and except what they give you. Vote the union in to negotiate what you want as techs.

Ending the race to the bottom for the middle class starts with you.

@rpz, copied this comment from another thread here but it pretty much answers your question.

"At a certain competing telecom over the past decade, probably 80% of the lower management had their pensions ended and then were let go. The upper management never feels an ounce of pain and as a matter of fact CEO's of large corporations now seem to be making 250x what their average worker makes! The union employees at this telecom company still enjoy pensions and no layoff clauses. CEO's have representation, corporations have representation, in my opinion it's a no brainer for the worker to get some himself some representation."

A verizon guy perspective is helpful but not comparable...

CWA has represented verizon for well over 60 years. this guy most likely was hired into the union. he wasn't involved in the formation of one (like what we're trying to do)

2 shops in 2 days failed to vote union in. Maybe as a VZ union worker you could share your thoughts on pros and cons of union membership. I'm seeing some people on here that are commenting based only on their preconceived ideas of what unions are all about. I realize change is uncomfortable but some of these guys seem to be brainwashed company robots.

-Are you glad you are a union member?

  • Do you feel you and your family are more secure and better off because of union?
