Thread regarding Western Digital Corp. layoffs

When is the next round and what percentage?

"Some layoffs will happen". My message to management: make the cuts, get done with it, and assure the employees who remain - no more cuts for another N months/years.

For those wondering what is going to happen at Western Digital and it's subsidiaries in March 2017, my contact in WD confirmed that layoffs are going to happen in March and that no employee from WD or it's subsidiaries (SanDisk, HGST, sTEC, etc) will be exempt from scrutiny for being potentially laid off. However, WD did distribute it's STI (employee bonuses) recently in 2017. Let's hope that the executive management at WD is fair and also scrutinizes it's executive staff for potential streamlining as well. The upcoming WD layoffs will definitely offset the morale boosting action of the recent employee bonus distribution. What should be questioned is the sanity of the WD executive management, especially if they plan to acquire the Toshiba NAND division in the midst of a WD layoff.

March is the next layoff. 20% is the rumor. They extended the Irvine lease till 2022.

@LN7zwxr-2psw. I agree that a suspension of RIFs would be good for employee morale, but the IT storage industry has become rather unstable in the past 2 years due to the incompetence of WD, HGST, Seagate, etc. to properly analyze their markets/customer demand. I would not recommend seeking employment (or expect stable employment) with any of these companies. Potential (and current) employees should look for work elsewhere.

"You can expect layoffs/cuts/RIFs every time there is a lag in sales."

You are right. However, this logic does not apply to WD. Employees are worried about layoffs, despite the company making a ton of money. So some employee assurance that they can focus in peace for the next 1 year etc is not a bad idea.

Good Luck to all. I do hope the next round of RIFs will be the final ones. it's torture

@LN7zwxr: Sorry, but you are hopelessly deluded if you believe that you can demand "...no more cuts for another N months/years..." You can expect layoffs/cuts/RIFs every time there is a lag in sales. No one is immune to layoffs in ANY industry, IT or otherwise.
