Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Intel forced, weekly 1:1s makes me uncomfortable

I have worked for various high tech companies before Intel and have never been forced to have these annoying weekly 1:1s with manager and monthly 1:1 with my SLM. It's mostly about "are you on schedule for xxx?", "why not?", "you need to do xxx"...very negative, uncomfortable. This has been going on for 6 years, and I have always been Successful with no S4.

You can bet that the Intel mgmt crowd is out there now getting their layoff selections in order.

Forced 1:1 is the background for being able to show you the door when you fail. Those with regular 1:1s should pretty much be sure they are getting fired this time around for IR/L4/L5.

Perhaps the best topic for the 1:1 "can you look at my resume and linkdedin profile" LOL

Believe it or not, there are (or were) Intel managers that hated the mandated 1:1s.

Unfortunately, I was routinely "coached" for not having the rigorous 1:1s with every member of my team.

I hated the crap that I was being "encouraged" to do as a manager at Intel so much that I ran away from the place. It is really sad that , at a time when the organization NEEDS inspired leadership, they are moving toward a culture that makes good leadership incredibly difficult.

Very simple, if you don't like leave, door is always open, if anything BK encourages it.

Yes, gh1! Managers at Intel think that having more and more meetings will solve problems. They do just the opposite, create more problems. In thinking more about the situation, these managers only create useless meetings just to keep themselves employed. Obviously, Intel can discard 80% of all meetings such that employees become more productivity. They can also reduce costs by firing the managers who intentionally set up useless meetings to maintain their own little empires. Intel makes me sick just thinking about all of the abuse going on.

Managers at Intel seem to think their biggest responsibility is to attend meetings. I don't get it, if their day isn't wall-to-wall meetings then they somehow feel like they're slacking off.

News flash - stuff gets done outside of meetings. They should be the exception, not the norm. Same goes with 1:1's, once a month is fine unless it's an RCG who needs supervision.

@fnn - This is @vax. You must be talking about way back, how long ago did you leave (just curious)? As I mentioned, in my case, before the past 2 years or so, employee would set the 1:1 schedule and agenda for career development, coaching, feedback, etc. Usually biweekly or even monthly. All that has changed and it is now a mandatory weekly grilling session set by manager (why did you do X, Y, Z this or that way? How come A or B is not ready? etc). I see this happening in multiple groups as a normal MO. That's the level of micromanagement we're currently under. Would like to hear from the forum if anybody sees different in their groups.

1:1s are not forced or at least were not when I was there. The employee owns the 1:1, sets the agenda, and can always opt out. A forced 1:1 tells me they are building a case against you. While I was there, I actually liked and looked forward to 1:1s. My managers told ME it was often the highlight of their day.

Don't count on Successful and no SL4 to protect you. Successful / SL 3 will be the new IR if they decide it is the new performance algorithm. Actually, this is nothing new to Intel culture. Focal always presumed with its rankings and ratings that a certain percentage of any group were bottom feeders. In the fatter days, all that would happen would be you'd get a CAP or redeployment at worst. Now, it is a way to tee up the next ISPs. Anyone who was VSP last time will be ISP next time unless they get an E or O at next Focal.

@vop - Damn right. It used to be the 1:1s were for career development, overall guidance/coaching, etc. Manager would give you feedback of course, but always in a positive atmosphere. Micromanagement would only occur if you were an intern/RCG (maybe for the first 6-9 months or so), or if you were really underperforming. Sometime in the last 2-3 years (at least for me/my team) all that changed and has now become a weekly grilling/micromanagement session for every single employee. Yet another way to kill morale/motivation.

If the 1:1 were supposed to be for the employee, should the employee decide if they want to have them and when ?

1:1s are (were) supposed to be the employees 1:1 where they talk about what THEY need to discuss, not the other way around. They weren't meant to be the manager's 1:1s where they grill the employee. I guess somewhere down the line that's changed and they've now become drill sessions. In the current environment that's not in the least bit surprising that they've changed.

@vbk that's a reflection of you. Why would a professional need to be baby-sat, spoon fed, mentored and micro-managed with weekly 1:1s and their manager. Rather manager should have open door policy to contact them and update them as work happens or as necessary .. .. with a formal weekly email update. That's how it happens in the BEST companies. I have worked in few of them.

Anyway who the F! is f! $hitty company CAMBIA .. they are not even known.

Work updates can happen in MANY OTHER WAYS. Intel 1:1 are about more than work updates, you missed the OP's point.

I can understand the weekly 1:1 with your immediate FLM, but the meeting once a month with the SLM is total BS. The FLM should be responsible for taking, compacting, and presenting your project stati to the SLM. You should not be managed by two separate mgrs. This sounds like a set up to a lousy review with SLM potentially overriding any positive review intended by your FLM.

I was laid off in July, ISP, from Intel. I started working for Cambia in August. I have a weekly 1:1 with my manager. Same routine. Not sure what the issue is? The OP prima donna? OP something special? He has a standard focus with a SP3 and feels he shouldn't have to update his manager because why? He's special? What an immature idiot. Probably a Clinton supporter too. OP is the reason our country is going to h3ll in a handbag.

I miss the weekly in-person 😭 staff meetings in my previous company

...and 🍩🍕🎂🍰 the yummy food we used to enjoy during the meetings.

It was so much fun with cool people, becoming more a team building event.

All Intel has to feed it's employee are rotten 🍎🍌🍊🍐 cheap fruits.

@mxg You're the idiot 'coz everyone knows 1:1 meetings happen everywhere but only when needed, with a meeting goal. We're talking about forced 1:1s for the sake of having 1:1s.

Get with the program, slow coach..

Can we compare Intel with a company better than Microsoft ?

Possibly a great place to work company that has excellent work culture, meets it's business goals, delivers it's products on time, etc

You will find that none of the better than Intel companies do 1:1 at the frequency Intel does.

Intel has too many managers, Directors and GMs with no real work. 1:1 keep their calendar full and allows them to think they are doing some work.

Post ID: @zxs+JwMTzuN

Someone tell this dumba$$ retard @ida that only Intel would hire ...and can't get a job anywhere else better...

.... that not having regular 1:1 is not in a few high tech companies ... IT'S THE STANDARD, NORM IN THE INDUSTRY.

So obviously, INTEL has it WRONG !!

Post ID: @evu+JwMTzuN

People like @ida are the problem at Intel, and there are too many like he/she/it ... who would rather stick to their old ways ... rather than being adaptive to new, being efficient and using better work practices used in the industry. Is it surprising then that Intel is not doing as well as it could to it's potential.

Exactly ! Same here. I am not sure I can last 6 years of it, as you have OP. It is too much bull$hit to handle.

1:1 with FLM, SLM are hostile which leave the employee feeling demotivated, energy drained and pile of more bull$hit work with bull$hit instructions to follow from the boss. Such meetings are completely UN-necessary, waste of time, achieve nothing. Serve no purpose.

In other effective companies, such meetings only take place 😄😂😁 if you are not performing or in trouble !!!

Staff meetings should be enough to get updates on work being done etc, in transparency, where the whole team exchanges ideas, gets to know what EXACTLY their peers are working on and why.

Not to sound mean but that's Intel, or your particular manager. If you don't like it you could always go back to one of the various high tech companies you mentioned that don't do that. That's what I'd do. Double win for you too. No more annoying 1:1s asking if you're on track and no risk of getting "that" dreaded 1:1 overnight.
