Thread regarding ITT Educational Services Inc. layoffs

Laid off. A week later, I'm not the only one.

I was laid off from ITT admissions on July 1st. Two weeks later, I find out that I was not the only one. 3 of my colleagues were also let go these past two weeks in order to make room for new call center appointments strategy. According to huff post article, itt will implement new recruiting strategy in order to increase revenue (aka layoffs?)

They should give you 2 weeks for every year of service, but probably won't . Threaten to sue if they don't give a decent severance.

"we really helped people better their lives by getting an education"

...except for the vast majority that dropped out rather quickly...because they were unduly pressured to enroll--RIGHT AWAY!!

You probably made the best of what you had left to give education to. If ITT focused on them, they would have gotten in this pickle. Instead, they decided to try to enroll everyone and their brother. Or someone who looked like their brother, or smelled like their brother, or looked like they might be able to smell like their brother.

Well, I happen to be one of the "chopped ". After over 21 years of service, they eliminate my position, WOW! It has been over a month now and Im still unemployed with a MBA and over 21 years experience. I still dont understand how you can eliminate the Dean and Registrar position all in the same day. Unbelievable, thanks Kevin. (Thanks for the "slap in the face" severence pay also).

Loved working for that company, we really helped people better their lives by getting an education. But now just feel like I was just kicked to the curb all because Kevin has to save his a--.

"The DOR and the Director claim they were blindsided too"

...The DOR will probably be gone soon...why have a DOR with only 2 reps? HQ will proabaly run the recruiting.

There were 8 of us in admissions. Now there are only two left. We were totally blindsided on July 15 2016. The lay offs were a big surprise to us. No warning. The DOR and the Director claim they were blindsided too. Yeah, right.

When I started teaching at ITT (nights), I was unaware about the existence of the reps & all of their endless calling. I assumed all of my students sought out ITT, but also thought it strange that so many immediately dropped out. About a month later I met someone in the hall who said they were very upset about a phone issue. I asked why it was so bad & they said "how would they be able to convince anyone to enroll at ITT if the phones are down!" It didn't make sense at the time, but does now.

It's easy enough for recruiters and administration to remain ignorant of low academic standards. Isn't that part of the ITT-Tech business model?

At my campus the administrators and recruiters, including career services director, are all full time employees, and leave by 7 pm, only an hour or two after the vast majority of students and faculty (virtually all part-time temporary employees) show up. The job description of recruiters indicates only need for sales experience, no knowledge of academics, or even a college degree. Better for business!

For years, the full-time academic group has been vastly outnumbered by salespeople. Frankly, as faculty person, I find the campus environment unsettling because of that. It doesn't feel like working at a college. The few full time academics have insane working hours, with chairs teaching several classes, and 60 to 80 hour weeks. It's like the faculty are regarded as expendable, an extremely unhealthy environment for a college. And the enrollment has been plunging for years, so this business model is horribly misguided.

Honestly, the working environment is much improved now at my campus, now that it has lost 2 recruiters and gained a faculty chair. The environment is better because students are becoming more educated about the situation ITT-Tech is in -- they are grown ups and can understand the issues with poor curricula and short-term faculty, and now are learning all about accreditation.

That awful bubble of secrecy erected by company do-gooders is breaking down finally. I am fully exercising my right to academic freedom now, and it feels really good, instead of worrying constantly about pissing off a recruiter or supervisor for being a real educator.

Some recruitment staff may have been blissfully unaware of the declining academic standards at ITT Tech but from the perspective of academic staff the system has appeared academically fraudulent for some time.

That is why large numbers of former ITT Tech academic staff have left ITT Tech for colleges where they actually want to teach students and believe in enforcing academic standards.

Private for Profit College, receiving Revenue from Federal Financial Aid and traded publicly on the NYSE. Not a good mix you can say. Corporate Greed without any real Regulating. That's what it all boiled down too. Read and say what you will. People will always remember the bad things they read about ITT, but there are SO many success stories that will never be told and published. You hear the all the negative things, and unfortunately people and graduates don't post all the positives that came about as a result of Graduating from ITT. A lot of really good people lost their jobs today. People that really cared about their students and went the extra mile, not because it was their job, but because they really cared and did things the right way. We weren't all like the dishonest sales people, some people make us out to be.

Not expected inside in kool aid drinking hot air infested bubble that most ITT Tech admin staff are not allowed to escape from - until suddenly they are freed and have time to stare at the mirror and figure out who that is staring back.

"I think ITT Tech does a great job. "

A great job of what? Coercing academic fraud on a daily basis? ITT's administration operates as a cult and loves to demand the same pass rates in classes no matter what the capabilities the recruited/scammed students actually have.

If the DoE should be blamed for anything it should be for not acting against this sham of a school a lot earlier!

@1osb, ha ha, that's a good one.

Here's another one. He told me that the academic department now has 2 full time members: the chair, and the campus-director/dean. He said this with a straight face. But he had trouble maintaining eye contact.

Watch for the shifty eyes!

"Dean and campus director positions are combined"

...So will the director report the dean's lackluster numbers to HQ?

Two reps were let go at my campus, so now two reps left plus DOR. Was told this is new country-wide model. Rumor has it the reps were not too sad about leaving.

My campus has been operating under "small campus" model for a while. One chair. Dean and campus director positions are combined. Chair is supposed to teach 4 classes, along with chair duties, and whatever duties the director/dean doesn't have time for. Not great for morale.

Also found out student enrollment dropped 17%, from Spring to Summer quarter. Wonder what "tiny campus" model is.

They just let go 5 out of the 7 reps at our campus today. Now all we have two reps and a DOR in our recruiting department, which is supposed to be the same model for all the schools. The end of ITT Tech is coming soon.

Exactly, but the problem isn't that it is free money, every dollar of that is blood money that goes against the credit and future abilities of millions of people in this country and holds them back from getting married or buying a house, for a mistake they made a decade earlier in their life. It wasn't even really a mistake when you have professional con artists who spend their entire life learning how to coerce and lie their assoff to young people to get them to sign up, it is nothing short of a scam. A scam with life long damage to the victims.

They just let go of more than half the admissions team. Moral is at an all time low at the campus. I think ITT Tech does a great job. But nonetheless the govt, and other things take precedent. I understand the governments concern, but for-profit schools are no worse than traditional schools. Traditional schools are just harder to get into. But there are plenty of students who graduate from "non-profit" schools (who somehow make millions) that go to school for 4 years have $215,000 in debt and go to work making $35,000 or less. Sorry to hear of the companies troubles. They are losing a lot of good people

The whole problem is the big bag of money the govt sets by the curb for the free grab-- "now you schools, lets only use this money for those who really want an education". Rep (to homeless, broke person) "did you know that if you go to school here you can qualify for $30000 in govt money!!!--how does that sound". Sales guys push hard selling a $500 couch, let alone a sure thing $40000 package. If schools are so confident of their processes & product & placements, schools should be required to be paid only after the student has graduated and passed a govt-given skills test. No grad or no skill, then the school gets nothing for that student. They'd probably think twice about enrolling some of them. Right now it PAYS for them to be careless--what have they got to lose? If you saw 200 new bags of $30000 next to the curb each week & had nothing to lose, what would you do--take 1 or 2? Maybe at first. You'd loosen up and eventually be bringing in your front-loader each week.

Stop blaming the administration and look at the mounds of evidence that ITT Tech simply stunk. Once upon a time ITT Tech had a good name but it was driven into the dirt by successive managements.

Why should our taxpayer money be used to sustain a fraudulent business model and inflict damage on our fellow citizens?

Hey Guys, sorry to hear about the layoffs, this administration has a major hard on for ITT Tech. Look at what happened to University of Phoenix, take a look at who the partners are who bought it for next to nothing it is all a big ploy to drive down stock prices then investors swoop in and all of a sudden University of Phoenix is a great idea and good school. I think the US Dept of Ed agreed to let ACICS stay as an accreditor if they sacrificed ITT Tech. Look out for one of Obama's cronies to sweep in and but the company at next to nothing.

ITT has blatant double standards - the standard that the curriculum calls for on a module and the one that is applied to get Carmel the pass rates it demands. In short, it is academic fraud.

Many teaching establishments have problems but ITT is one of the worst and by a large margin.

What state are you in? I am sorry that you have lost your job after 10 years! That is so hard. Yes it was a result of the DOE requirements---but that is overlooking the fact that the DOE was justified in making the requirement in the first place. In speaking about grad rates, you may be correct, I don't have the data in front of me, but what do you make of the poor nursing licensure exam pass rates at Breckinridge? You see, it is not all about quantity (how many graduate). It is about quality, too.

I can tell you from my own observation, that a quality nursing education program does not exist at Breckinridge

Love them or hate them... this is a direct result of the department of ed requirements. Whether or not you like ITT's educational system, it's a sad day. I was let go after being here more than 10 years and so were hundreds across the country.

To all the haters that say "you deserve what you get." Keep in mind, most regionally accredited schools have lower grad rates and lower entry level wages, but we're the bad guys. F--- you and your double standards.
