You won't see any progress on this Fab. The current site mgr is a complete idiot. They may need to sell to Samsung or TSMC.

The funny thing is at one time (maybe still) there was a plant manager to oversee an empty building on the org chart. The others just had too much on their plate to make sure everything is going well in an empty shell. Another reason why Intel has gone to sheet these days.
Built to be sold to tsmc or Samsung? Or it could make an awesome airsoft combat arena! For the next layoff all employees will be selected via airsoft combat.

The shell will likely stay empty for a long time. With every generation die get smaller and as we all see volumes get less and less so intel simply doesn't need the space. This was built when delusions leaders were sure x86 would take over the world.
People still talk about the building Obama dedicated in order to be idled basically the next day.
And another irony is that it runs 14nm and we were so constrained earlier that we couldn't meet Skylake demand, sending street prices up $50 or more. Awesome, misread demand one way only to misread it the next way as well.
Fab42 was built in the AZ desert to be dug up by future archaeologists. The archeologists will ask the question about why primitive man would have built such a structure that apparently served no purpose. FYI.. The former site mgr suddenly and quietly "retired" over a year ago and left with his tail between his legs. The other mgmt tried to awkwardly spin the story.
so we have a yet-to-be-depreciated several billion dollar fab there, and a fully depreciated one not far to the north east of there, running a skeleton crew.... What will a non-technical board do??
the irony of that building is it was primarily built on anticipated demand of intel 14nm Atom SOC winning Samsung and Apple. Now it sits empty, and on the books it has zero depreciation (the largest cost of carrying the building vs keeping the lights on) until equipment is put into it and the building starts to be used. So the longer it sits empty the more motivation Intel will have to keep it that way
