Intel requested 8,351 H-1B visas and 5,172 permanent green cards for foreign workers between 2010-2015, citing that they could not find enough skilled American workers. Now that Intel's requests have been satisfied, the company lays off 12,000 American employees.

@zdi - You just confirmed it. 8.3k H1bs obtained and 7K US workers dismissed. That is several orders of magnitude greater than the Disney event. Thank you for confirming the numbers.
Intel is not popular choice by candidates and H1B's like it, so if they would lower number of H1B's they would be forced to hire lower quality US candidates (while good US candidates go where they want, which is serious companies that start with serious interview and have good track record of delivering products, like Apple, Google, NVidia,..)
I am not against Indians/Chinese or anyone of any race, but I am against the USA government still accepting H1B applicants. I agree, during the earlier years (two decades ago), there may have been a shortage of talented people in the technology field, but now with all these layoffs, the government should put a hold on any applicant with H1B visa. If a company lays off even one American citizen in the same group as a person with H1B visa, then it should also layoff the H1B visa employee.
Let me give you an example of what happened in my company (not Intel). In my group we have two H1B employees and about 14 USA citizen employees working on testing product software. We all have the same type of skills. Most of the time the USA citizen ends up helping the H1B guy since he doesn't have the years of experience the USA guy has. No problem, since we are all in the same group, everyone helps out everyone. Well, when layoffs came around, the 54 year old male, USA citizen got laid-off, and one of the H1B visa guys contract got extended (and this same H1B guy was trained by the 54 year USA Citizen to do the same exact job).
So not having enough of the right skilled people to do the job in USA is a lot of bull. USA government/Congress has to do wake up and do something about this.
What an idiot who posted this. Probably 7K out of the 12K will be from USA. Out of the 7K alot of non Americans make up part if that number
I was laid off and I am not American.
It won't just be Americans when all is said and done. Have you not noticed the tech industry dump every 8 years, or did you just think you were special because you were milking daddy Intel for so long? Semiconductor is a huge market and economic indicator not only sector wise but overall. When it falls so does "Rome.". Go back to school or improve your skills. It is far from the end of the world for you unless you choose it to be.
1) Not all 12000 are going to be in the US
2) H1Bs and GC holders are also a part of the lay offs.
