Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Say you end up staying at Intel for whatever reason. Will you try to look for employment elsewhere? Is Intel a place you can trust?

If you trust the company, why?

if you don't trust the company, where else would you go? Or would you stay and hang in there?

I'm an outsider EE from Oregon looking on with some sympathy but not too engaged in your hand wringing. So you have an 11% reduction in force every 5 years? You should be celebrating your good fortune at working in the PC market where your only competition is AMD and not some government funded Chinese IC company that has blatantly stolen your IP and what they didn't steal your CEO gave to them to improve a couple quarters sales to increase his bonus.

That is what I have seen happen to most of my colleagues and their jobs evaporated through no fault of their own at a rate of 10% or more per year.

I started at Tek in the early 80's when there were 24k employees and left in 1990. How many employees does Tek have now, <1k? They created some incredible technologies but more often than not incredible technology does not make fortunes (or jobs). Many sneer at Tek culture and their market ineffectiveness but in the end Agilent/Keysight has met the same fate. There are very few technology companies that haven't followed a similar path.

It is tough to lose the security of a corporate job. Intel is still an anomaly of job security even with these layoffs.

If you are pissed then do something constructive to change corporate governance and CEO pay and the stealing of US jobs by H1Bs

BK & crew may have IQs of 140+ but EQs of <50. Layoffs every year are deadly to the health of any company. It is a vicious spiral. To delay a program all you need is 1 or 2 people who are sick of the company lies and/or want to get out and know their skills will get them another job immediately regardless of how they leave. I'm not saying people sabotage the work (although maybe that happens) but slower work can become a serious bottleneck in the long project, pushing everything out and potentially impacting multiple projects... just from a couple folks. BK is an emotional idiot and does not understand that when you fire people every year for financial reasons (not survival reasons) you lose the trust and loyalty of the employees. BK treats his employees like dogs, beating them regularly and then expecting them to be loyal. Guess what BK...

@ixk - absolutely. It's not hard to root those Bain guys out with the phonebook website either. They all report to one program manager from legal directly under Krzanich and have Bain in the org unit name. This is the same way they did SET, when Krzanich was just one of those VPs hiding out in ATTD with Walden and the boys- remarkably and completely untouched at the time. These are the OWG that are the enemies of the company.

If I'm not impacted, I'm going to find a way to leave anyway not because of any hate towards but more like I believe I'm worth more than this and Intel is not what it used to be. Intel is just like any other company. They are good to employees as long as business allows them to be and right now, it doesn't. I'm as upset over exec pay as the next guy but that's a moot argument for the 99%, it's just good to be at the top so that's beating a dead horse. I'm upset that I have to deal with layoffs again but as a worker bee with no intention of starting my own business, that's how life will be so I make the most of it. Intel (or any other company) is not my friend nor did they ever tell me they were. It was a contract and unfortunately, they are more powerful than I am and so far, I'm not good enough yet to dictate the terms of employment so they do. So while as traumatic as getting let go is, it just further reinforces the point that we need to set our own path so that we minimize the chances of ending up back here again in the future. All the best folks, hope you all land on your feet.

Don't even think about working for this evil of the evil company.

You will be just brutally abused and will be kicked out eventually.

Especially if you are an analog engineer, this is your terrible grave yard.

Simply NO FUTURE ABSOLUTELY!

I have seen way too may of these actions since I was first hired by Intel in 1989 (been retired a couple years now, had enough of the BS). The first was only a couple months after I began at Fab6. Fortunately I was never on the receiving end but after I became a manager I saw first-hand how these things work. All they care about is hitting the numbers and avoiding lawsuits. If the off-shoring does not do enough then this is the next card they will always play. Its too bad, things were really good for a long time but shortly after Y2K it all went down quickly at the expense of the employees. Best of luck to you all but in this job market you my want to start looking for a new job yesterday.

@fpz - I was one of those who drank intel kool aid and wanted to be a lifer. However one terrible experience made me realize what I was worth here. It broke my loyalty to this company (and any other company that I will work in future). From that day, I consider myself a contractor. I am going to work till I am satisfied with the contract. They can terminate me when they think I am no longer valuable to them and I can leave when I decide the contract terms doesn't benefit me.

@olr - There is a good chance I will stay. Been with Intel for 10 months. Successful + SSL3. From what I've read , it seems relatively safe. Like you, I would stay behind for personal reasons, not necessarily out of loyalty to the company. I need to build up savings. My husband who is legally blind needs the benefits. I'd like some of my stock to vest before going elsewhere.

I'm networking and seeking out positions now just to get ahead of the curve if needed.

@beb - Really? I've been working at Intel since last June. My inclination is to go elsewhere. it was an honest question to gather perspectives so I could make an informed decision. No need to be a troll and toss out insults.

I worked for Adobe 15 years ago and was RIF'd. Ever since then the layoffs have been happening 2-3 times a year like clockwork. Miraculously (and mind-boggling) I have a few ex-colleagues who are still there. They've told me it is hell and to not dare try re-applying. So I went for Intel and moved to Portland. And now I'm scratching my head, wondering how and when to make my next maneuver before the next big round of layoffs.

But here's the thing - job security is imagined. I was self-employed for 15 years - The years between Adobe and Intel. I did quite well for myself, but with overhead employees, etc , it was even more stressful than this experience. There was a three year stretch where we lost 80% of our income and could not recover. That was after turning insane profits for 10 years straight. I feel like i have some options - go somewhere else or navigate my way up the food chain and continue to lead. But that's assuming I get to keep my job. If not, then the universe will clearly have made that decision for me.

One thing you need to understand is that this layoff business is now in the hands of very highly paid MBAs from BAIN consulting who are advising BK and the Board, doing 10000 ft spreadsheet math just to make next quarter's Wall Street numbers. I heard they take up a sizable portion of one of the floors in RNB. So if for a second you think these people are thinking "trust" or "loyalty" you live in an alternate reality... they are just number crunchers. That's why I will take my money and go... next round they may realize there's not enough cash. Everyone complains about Murthy this and Murthy that... honestly, look at the 200+ VPs Grade 11 and 12 folks... all LIFERs at Intel that will keep their jobs after running the company into the ground.

Wrote a long story, but I don't want to write my story on public forums. So here is the short version.

Zero trust and zero loyalty. Most likely I will survive this round as I never had SL4, SL5 or an IR. But if rumour mill is true I may get a VSP (4 consecutive Successful due to transfers, heard 3 consecutive sucessful in last three years will getyou qualified for VSP, but again it is purely based off of rumour).Staying back because it serves me and I am benefiting from it at this phase of my life. So purely for personal reasons.

Honestly, this has ruined my perception of the brand -- coming into intel I was seeing them as a bastion of stability -- the kind of place people go to to stay for a LONG time. Boy was I wrong.

It's honestly no different than any other large corporation at this point. Most of what actually made it a "Great Place to Work" is in the process of being eliminated (aside from that sweet parental leave if you happen to have a kid while working there).

I easily survived SET in 2006, and the layoffs in 2014 and 2015, I went through HC actions in several divisions with no problems, and I would have not been selected for this one either. But I retired early in late 2015 because I could and I was sick of that sh1t. This and the experiences of multiple process transfers resulted in zero trust and zero loyalty.

No Way! The number of VSP/ISPs are becoming too frequent. BK said something like this was last done in 2006! but what about 2014 VSPs ??!
