Pick up the frickin phone and call people or use the video conference rooms. You don't really need to fly somewhere for a F2F all the time.

It's funny how external events force companies to show their hands. Was once in an office that our GM assured us was not closing ("We just need to deliver on our commitments...") and saw the building management folks showing prospective tenants for the space "when your lease expires in 3 months".

Same with the Mather airport situation. It might not be THE sign that things are ending there but it certainly shows that FM isn't going to be a focus.

There's alot to be repulsed by with in regards to Intel's behaviors however your cafeteria worker issue is not one of them. While I am fully disgusted by the extreme levels of income inequality in the US, (and parts of California exhibit some of the most extreme cases), objectively speaking you can't lay this on Intel. They are contracting the services of a food catering service and the workers in question work for the food catering service. If something was done to provide better pay for their workers, it would need to be provided either by their employer maybe because they develop a conscience, or the more likely path,... by legislation to bring up minimum wage to the point where it can be a living wage. Don't blame Intel for this, blame big money corporate interests who have rigged the economy such that the top 1% takes nearly all of the income, while having established a race to the bottom for the average working in this country trying scratch out a living for themselves and their families.

Still live here around Sacramento after ISP. My new job is half the distance. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Had no problem finding a new job here.

Yeah, if given the choice, no tech person would want to live and work in the Suckcramento area.

@1lqs, I buy your analogy. FM has always been a step child. Oregon is where the action is so eventually they will send most jobs over and AZ as economy sinks. CA has never been business friendly.

Jumping from shuttle cuts to layoffs in FM is very reasonable. It's not proven, and is weak evidence (especially in the short term, like June), but is at least a logical thing to speculate on. I can see the numbers at the FM site going down due to attrition and lack of back fills there, then maybe in a few years something happens.

The fat white dude is the same dude that you met in immigration when you were begging for your work visa with $50 in your pocket. Let that sink in and I am not even white. I immigrated to this country and always appreciate what this country has provided to me and my family. Never forget.

The Indians prefer train travel while the Chinese enjoy riding their bikes. Fat white dudes dropping dead from lack of exercise improved diversity numbers so it was a no brainer.

I don't think you understood the question @-mcs. It WAS about cutting people. The OP was afraid that canceling the shuttle was "the writing on the wall" that they would next would be another "DP" with closure of the FM site shortly after the shuttle was dropped.

I used to travel from Chandler to Folsom once a month or so. Getting on the AZA-->SJC leg was always the sticking point, as the Folsom leg of the route always had seats. Sometimes I'd have to fly commercial into Sacramento if the leg to San Jose was full.

Folsom's a big site. It's an inconvenience, to be sure, but I doubt it's a sign of pending site closures.

There is nothing ominous about this. Had the airport not been renovating AND BK said to pull the plug, I can see where one might worry but that was not the case. The data said the seats weren't full and while it's a hassle to have to drive to SJ for a plane, it's more cost effective. I'd have done the same thing had it been my decision.

There are other things to worry about in this world, this isn't one of them. :)
