Thread regarding Accenture Ltd. layoffs

Digital's Killing It - Accenture plans to hire about 100,000 people in FY16 and spend as much as $1 billion on acquisitions

Digital will bring in about 10 billion dollars in revenue. We have no competition there, we make the market. So much for Accenture layoffs.

Digital is NOT fine. I was in digital sales (SM) and got laid off with a wave of other digital sales staff and some consultants on bench back in February. Dozens of MDs in Digital are being laid off this month and last. My sources tell me Digital is $100s of millions behind sales plan. For multiple quarters.

And the competition is catching up. EVERYONE, from pure-play to non-traditional consulting (e.g., platform and SaaS like sales force.com) are acquiring design agencies as instrumental component of their digital strategies, similar to ACN. Everyone is in the digital business narrative. IMO we grabbed up too many agencies and produced a staff glut that created too much internal competition. By-product of (or core to) Accenture's meritocracy culture is only the strong (and well connected) survive.

Accenture marketing has reigned supreme to get some critical first mover advantage for Accenture in Digital. Now layoffs come after double digit % market salary adjustments last year to keep us. However, the ability to deliver (and sell) many digital capabilities (e.g., analytics, mobility, IoT, digital marketing, etc.) is becoming more common place. Competition is catching up. Cost structure and ability to compete on price will trump the value driven sale with many clients. Furthermore, clients are seeing digital as core competency, so they are staffing key roles internally. Hence the layoffs MUST continue until the cost structure gets under control. Oh to have been a 20 year veteran and not 4 year experienced hire. I simply wasn't ready to go yet. But the rules of survival will prevail. And that's how it works in large firms. The truth, however, will always win in the marketplace. You simply cannot hide. Either you have the winning formula or you don't. I certainly wouldn't bet against Accenture. It always adapts. And don't blink because the market will change. In the words of the late Robin Williams, "Keep up!" Except I'm not laughing this time.
