If you are confident of your performance and value to the team, you shouldn't worry about the layoff of 5%. This is still the case at VMware. The ones who are most worried about layoffs are the first ones to be laid off. So if you genuinely believe you are good performer, then stop reading this web site and go back enjoy your weekend.

The whole msbu in Colorado Springs has there meetings tomorrow at 9:30. About 100 people there will be gone. Nothing to do with performance, it's the whole Dev site.
I've been at vmware 10 years, and the idea that "top performers need not worry" is nonsense. Plenty of time talented folks were let go in favor of keeping brown nosers. If you're competent and do your job well, and someone else is marginal but better at buttering up middle management, guess who's getting the pink slip? I've seen this happen at least three times--where folks I knew who were darn good at their jobs were let go and oxygen wasters were kept on.
Actually anyone, who openly and publicly says that the layoff is based on performance, may be legally liable.

Very true! The names on the layoff list are not necessarily based on performance. I remember in 2013 layoff in VMware, the management had emphasized that they were not based on performance. Pat repeated the same in an all hand meeting at that time as well. They used the word, "Business Realignment".
In the past they have RIF'd top performers to restructure business units. There is not always logic applied.
Source - got RIF'd despite getting all 4s & 5s on every perf review for 6 years.
@brx: "Please dont believe rumors"
Well, we will find out within days.....
True. Just check the glassdoor reviews. It reflects the true vmware standard. Please dont believe rumours. Only non performing may go.
I have seen so much junk sitting here. And have been here for years.
Vmware cannot fire. Its just rumour.
A good rat is to swim and escape from a sinking ship!!!
Even a top performer has good reasons to worry! The Wall Street recently has made it clear what it thinks about VMware's future.
Still 5% bro
I think this will be so massive, nobody will be safe... I do tend to worry more than I should though
