whom are getting an inflated salary and possible free tuition for the kiddos at the finest private schools in New Orleans, let me include you in on the other side. Well, I found out I can buy an already cooked turkey with food stamps as long as it's cold. Can you imagine being educated, investing your future and kids livelihood on a company that penalized the wrong people for their bad decisions, and when it's all said in done, reality hits. It doesnt matter who screwed up, who got cut, who stayed, what matters is my family and they deserve a good holiday So me, an educated man swallows my pride and ask the clerk "may I buy this turkey with food stamps". Can't blame Royal Dutch for the experience. It's very humbling. I should say Thank you!

No, @EDF7QCK-5pux, in Houston it may be, but not in New Orleans. You get what you pay for or what you can afford but a decent education is available.

"finest private schools in New Orleans" - isn't that an oxymoron?
Don't be humbled by food stamps. Take pride in yourself for doing whatever it takes to provide for your family. Hold your head high because you deserve respect. Take every advantage of those taxes you have been paying for so many years. Anyone a little uncomfortable seeing food stamps knows that discomfort comes from knowing they are one pay check away from being in the same boat.
And if you humble yourself for the all time low of applying for food stamps, remember it's only temporary and intended to help families in crisis. Don't talk yourself out of it. It was the must humiliating day when I pulled out that card to pay for purchase. But my refrigerator is fully stocked. I qualified for $540. For family of 3.
You do not want to say you have a savings account or retirement or cd. They have no way of checking. Just mention your checking account and withdraw some out if your checking has a lot in, just for the first interview. Once they meet with you they will ask for your bills and utilities and bank statement. After interview put all your money back in. I was told by the very kind lady at unemployment office they don't like big fancy cars. If you have. Modest car to list as an expense, don't list the expensive one. And definitely don't list your kid is in private school. They don't ask so don't volunteer that info
You may be able to file for an extension. Even the the max is a measly $247. A week, it's better than nothing
Also here in Louisiana your unemployment benefits that are suppose to run for 6 months are reduced by however long your severance was equivillant too. So if you got 4 months of severance then your benefits will only be for two months. I guess I should have waited to apply for benefits till I reached the end of my severance period. But I didn't know this. Just got a call today from the unemployment office!!
