@12zy26xc-4zip... Except you just admitted that you work BOTH saturday and sunday! 4 hour shifts or not, you still work. So how is that a life? Remember that this is ONLY a retail store, cvs is not a hospital or police department, NO reason for them to be open on Christmas!

I’m a store manager and I still have a life. The only thing stopping you from having a life is you. The key is to be smart witch scheduling. I don’t like working weekends so I only work a 4 hour shift on Saturdays and Sunday’s. Boom!!!

Retail is not a place for life balance ! If it was it would have nobody working during a holiday ! Next job you get please share that life balance sh@t with the person interviewing you up front before they hire you ! Most likely they believed you when you put on your application full availability! Specially, if your store is running well.
And you as the store manager have a well developed team, of course you should be able to do as you please, as long as the business needs are met. There has to be a work life balance. After all we are people/humans!!!!!

The DL was wrong to force the SM to work.
Typical field management at CVS. Uncultured !!! Sad they get away with it.

@12zy26xc-3gtu... Yes, it’s YOUR store, not the DL’s. So as a store manager, YOU should have control over when you work, NOT the DL! The OP made sure his store was covered AND he even agreed to work Christmas, so his team could enjoy the day off, so that DL should’ve minded his own business! Heaven forbid you actually have a family you want to spend time with!

You all chose retail knowing full well the expectations. It’s your store, you should do what’s best for the business. Your DL shouldn’t have to tell you what days you need to work. It’s your store, take some ownership in the business. If you chose not to, then move on and quit complaining.

Me and at least 3 other store managers are off this weekend in my district. Our DL said nothing about it. We're actually having a Christmas party tonight

To the poster who said DLs are on vacation. My dad, a Vietnam war vet used to say. Don’t worry about what others do. You just worry about your self. Stop being making yourself a victim and worry who is allied to be off and who is not. Directive was given. It needs to followed. Manager didn’t do so and DL is enforcing the directive. End of story. You don’t have to like the taste, but you have to eat it so either quit or stop whining. And for you 10 knuckle heads who disagree and keep hitting the negative reaction button... Your way of thinking is why this company made it mandatory to work. If they didn’t, unless managers like you would not be working.

Our DL did not say a word about working the 21-24 until last week!

This policy has been out for a while now (shared by my DL at least 3 months ago)..why complain now? Why get annoyed about someone enforcing a policy (doing their job)

So the SM cant have Sunday off but how many DLs are on vacation???I know of DLs that are off thru the new year!!!so the Sunday before cant be that damn important

Looking at the replies on this post and trying to wrap my head around those trying to justify this manager’s decision , we really have some dumb managers working for this company. Pretty simple stuff here, but let me break it down for the learning impaired.

A communication comes down from the divisions months ago that the weekend before Christmas THROUGH 12/24 is mandatory for STORE managers to work.

YOU decide this is unnecessary and decide to follow your own agenda despite the directive given. You also decide not to discuss it with your DL before hand and are now feeling butt hurt that he has called you out.

You state that Sunday is not as busy as Christmas and Christmas Eve. It maybe be true (for you) but you do not get to make that decision on your own. In reality, the stretch of 12/21-12/24 (the mandatory days) Collectively are the busiest days in retail and why we are expected to work. It has nothing to do with things packing out. It has to do with being a present leader (and following instructions).

You come to the rescue of your management team so they don’t have to work Christmas Day out of the goodness of your heart, even though they have the ability to earn double time while you as a salary employee would receive no additional compensation.

You fail to sell your managers on earning extra cash and working together to maybe split the day into smaller shifts to make it fair. Instead, you become the martyr and take one for the team without discussion with your BOSS first.

Then you come here to complain that that the bad man has hurt you and you rally a bunch of like minded bird brains. They say dumb things like corporate is closed on Christmas, why aren’t the stores. You know who else is closed? Town hall. And who goes to work? Police, Fire and EMS. That’s life. You signed up for it. You could leave if you don’t like it. Otherwise stop whining.

Lol lot of people calling people names but at the end of the day, do what your DL told you from november. The DL told you you have to work that weekend far in advance because the OP has not mentioned it. They tried to sneak a day off behind the bosses back. They were hoping the DL didnt notice. That is not a manager who plans well

I might get hate for this but there was a memo cascaded down about when store managers are required to work during holiday weeks.

Sounds like your DM is a jerk and might not have sent it to you. He could've approached this better.

I can't believe CVS created Christmas and decided to have it happen so fast. Why would they create a holiday only a week from now that would generate the most sales in any week of the year?

Honestly this is a scenario that shouldn't be a shock to you and unless there was a sudden last minute issue with staffing, you really have no one to blame for it but yourself

It really should be a balanced out schedule that week to compliment the customers, employees and work flow. But who am I kidding it’s CVS they do things backwards and with no regard to the front line people(store employees) in fact your DL could care less, the regional could care less and the company could care less. And then they have the nerve to close the pharmacy but not the store. Totally backwards and quite honestly not right.

That you have no life outside of work, because the store is your life. Kiss your family goodbye, because the moment you become a store manager, you’ll be at the store 60-70 hours a week. Wanna spend the holidays with your kids, too bad the store is open and you’re required to work! FYI... pretty much the entire company shuts down on Christmas, except the stores. If that doesn’t tell you what cvs thinks of you, then I don’t know what does. Cvs=Slave Labor, period end of story. The OP is right! All they wanted was to spend a day with their family! Shame on that DL for ripping that SM for wanting to be with family! THAT is exactly what is wrong with cvs these days! Screw the employees, anything to make a buck. Would it really k–l corporate to throw the store employees a bone once in a while?

Work Sunday Monday Tuesday *mandatory
Work Wednesday because of staffing
Work Thursday to ensure clearance is done correctly
Work Friday truck
Sign sale Saturday
But make sure you take three days off and your schedule will only reflect 37 hours.

You guys are all looking at this the wrong way. Some managers don’t have the luxury of taking Christmas off and spending it with their family because their employees are not volunteering to work on Xmas. So when are they supposed to spend time with their family? At least he’s not taking Christmas Eve off. I would do the same thing if I was forced to work Christmas due to the lack of bodies. And remember. We all get 3 days off that week too.

Your DL should create a safe space for you and your hurt feelings.

This mandatory weekend was communicated months ago. Why would you think working Christmas would absolve you of this obligation? Why wouldn’t you have spoke to your DL before you made plans and now have to disappoint your family (and blame CVS for it)? Why would you think as a manager it would be acceptable to be off the weekend before Christmas or any “retail” holiday for that matter?

I have worked for this company for 20 years and I have never been off the weekend before Christmas or Christmas Eve and not because I was told to work. I have worked because I am the leader and I am a business person who is responsible for the financial health of my store. I want to make sure I maximize sales and service while I have the most amount of customer traffic for the entire year. You say your store will do the same amount of sales during this time with no increase. I don’t even know how that is possible unless your store is on a farm in the middle of nowhere. If this is true, I think you’ll have much bigger problems when they close your insignificant building and no other retailer will hire your incompetence.

If you didn’t schedule yourself to work the weekend before Christmas, then you are exactly the manager who would moan and complain that he or she was told to do so. You are paid to run your store. You should be there at the busiest times.

If you think differently you should put your masters degree to use somewhere else.

I wonder if restaurant managers all get together to complain that they have to work every Friday and Saturday.

They are like “ I know it is what I signed up for , and I make a good living BUT It’s not fair.. boo boo.”

Not an imbecile many stores on christmas day make plenty of sales that match or exceed christmas eve. Nothing else is open. But once again, its not common knowledge by any store manager with a few brain fuctioning brain cells that a DM would want you there the last weekend before christmas. Proper consolidation of merchandise at half off which is not after christmas is far less important than maximizing sales at higher profitabilty the busiest days leading up to christmas. Your lack of common sense is making the store managers with actual knowledge look bad.

This would have made since when the stores were actually busy...now that they are ghost towns I see no need to be there

I'm already over my base hours by a good bit next week. my "day off" they are mandating I be at the store? I'm scheduling myself 3 hours. Before the store opens. Hey, I was at the store. It was ready for the day.

Hey imbecile? You know that the season changes the 25th right? With the manager being there, better consolidation of the left over Xmas would be organized and ready for Thursday’s markets down. Busiest day is the 24th. That Sunday doesn’t matter. Therefore they should enjoy their day off. That’s a classic dL move that was never a front end employee.

Why didn't you to tell your dm ahead of time? No matter what you think of your engaging leader you should have checked with them. Its not uncommon for DMs to tell you long before christmas that you are supposed to be working pretty much all the weekends in December.

They want PMs to do the same, but we all know that isn't happening.

I’m in a 35k front store, so overall nothing to write home about. Same number of hours next week as every other week, so there’s no “loading it up” for the increased customer traffic. We’ll be busy on the 24th for all of the last minuters, but nothing before that.

I would ask the DL if he/she is working a 9 hour day also. What I would do is schedule yourself for that day in myschedule then call out sick. If you have sick time there is absolutely nothing the DL can do about it.

I hear you man. I don’t know anything about your store, but most of us see a significant increase in customer traffic the final days of the season. It’s not about ringing register or packing out merchandise. It’s about being there when the customers are.

In my store which is very high volume I really don’t need to be there. I want to be there. For my entire team I made it mandatory for them them to work the 21th 24th and I am in the trenches with them. It’s my opportunity to walk the floor and talk with customers. I let my team see me providing the best service possible. I get them engaged and try to keep it going into the new year so we can get off to a good start.

I’ve run low volume too and I did the same thing but mostly ringing register so I get it. I understand it seems wasteful to do a job anyone can do. But it is an opportunity for you to set your expectations for service with your cashiers.

Because my skills for running the register are so much better than my staff? If the merchandise is out, stacked high, what else can I do?
