58 Kmarts left

OK, being that we removed another 2, I figured I'd do the honors, and fix the list & my map. Here is the new map of remaining Kmarts:

Wondering if there will even be any on this list after This Week? Or will they just pull the plug on Kmart totally and just focus on maybe those small format Sears, going forward?

@8tkn Ya, Wikipedia is totally wrong on this. A of February 2020 (as it stands now), there will be 58 not 70 Kmarts. I'd gladly edit it, but they're not letting me do it through my IP address for some reason. But ya, that 70 # is totally wrong. These are the only go forward stores for now, but that number will almost surely shrink, after New Years Day!

For some reason, Wiki still states that there are 70 go forward Kmart stores. There are absolutely not 70, as I have verified this list of 58 and it is accurate. There are zero other stores that are not on this list of 58, that are not either closed or closing. So I'm not sure why Wiki is listing an extra 12 phantom locations for some odd reason. I would have edited it, but Wikipedia doesn't let me edit because of the "pr0xy" server I am using. If anybody wants to edit that page, it's here:

@7kkx That's why I'm glad this Jack dude, (whoever he is), keeps putting up this list. It must drive Eddie bonkers that his secret gets exposed. And it is totally accurate too. Now if someone wants to do Sears as well........

@6ebs I didn't mean about Liquidating stores. There are totally closed stores since 2018 that are still on that website. A bit tedious, but if you go state by state and add up all the Kmarts on there, you will find over 200 stores. Even if you count the 45 most recently announced Liquidating Kmarts, and add those to the 58 (for now) go forward stores, then you should have 103 total Kmarts open. The website lists over 200 so half the stores listed on the website are long since totally closed. They just flat out have refused to remove Dead stores from their site since around 2018. Very bizzare.

I know some like to debate this, but there are actually 59 Kmarts. There's one in the Sears in Brooklyn. Yeah, it's not a standalone, but it is a Kmart, nonetheless. And it technically is separate. You can't pay for Kmart merch at a Sears register at that store and vice versa.

When they announced the big batch of closures in early November, Transform actually did provide a number: 182 stores. But that's already antiquated since additional Kmart and Sears have been hit with store closing signs.

Post ID: @7tei+12v0Eh1o

When the last closing list came out, Transformco refused to disclose exactly how many Sears/Kmart stores were left. I think it’s pretty obvious why they would do that. They can’t have people knowing how close to the brink they could be. Bad for business.

It is reasonable for stores that are in the process of liquidating to still be listed on the website, though it would be nice if they had a notation indicating their status. So for now, there should still be more than 58 Kmart stores. But someone should be removing them after their final day.

@6rbl Since November 2019 LOL? There are stores on that obsolete website that closed YEARS AGO that they're not removing. Toms River NJ for example closed in 2018 but is still listed there for some stupid reason, along with tons of others. There are over 200 Kmarts still listed on that website yet only 58 remain, in actuality. My guess is that Ed doesn't want there to be an accurate count or list of remaining stores public. When I ask them on Twitter or FB for a list, they hem and haw, and don't answer directly. That's why it's awesome that this dude keeps making this list. I have Checked out this list 100% and it is accurate. There are zero stores other than what's in this list of 58, that are not closed or closing. So once again, judos for making this list. You are exposing what the company is trying to keep secret. Of course, expect this list to drastically shrink in January.

The online store list on the website haven't been synced with open stores in ages. No one cares. Certainly not the Eddie and the mo–n three.

Is anyone at Sears Holdings or Transformco bothering to remove stores from the website after their liquidations have finished? I know that (for example) Somerville, MA closed on November 17, yet it is still listed on Kmart's store locator.

Honestly, I don't Know why they don't close them all and convert to an online business. I mean, other than groceries (I'm old school, I like to touch meat and produce before buying it...can't do that through a computer), what need is there really for brick and mortar stores? Need a shirt or pants? Order online. Need furniture? Order online. There really is no future in stores (other than, again, food stores).

I was looking at your map buddy. Very interesting. A few observations. If you look at the 7 biggest states: CA has 9 stores left, but only 1 in the largest county (LA County), Long Beach. The next largest state, TX has 1 store in the SE corner near Mexico, but it has zero job openings so one would have to think they are closing. Florida has 4 stores in Miami, and the Keys to the south of Miami. Beautiful area, my friend invited me to play tennis there, but let's be honest. Those are touristy vacation spots, not where most permanent Floridians live. There are stores on the Keys in Key West, Key Largo, & Marathon, and one in Miami, but nothing north of that at all. Nothing on the panhandle, nothing in Orlando/Tampa/Jacksonville, nothing. Next largest state is good old NY. They have 4 stores in NYC, 1 slightly east of NYC in Long Island, 1 a few miles north of the city in White Plains. Absolutely nothing, yes nothing, in upstate NY.
Next largest state is IL, the HQ of Sears/Kmart, which has 1 Kmart in Des Plains, a smaller store with no electronics department, and also nothing but Seasonal jobs available so probably won't be around long. Next largest state in the country is PA, which has 5 stores, only in the eastern part of the state, again with mostly Seasonal jobs listed, so probably won't last long. Next state is Ohio which has over 11 million people yet no remaining Kmarts. Meanwhile, New Mexico with 2 million has 2 stores, Montana with 1 million has , and so does North Dakota which has like 600,000 people (same amount of stores as Texas, which has almost 30 million people).
Sorry for rambling, but in short, as someone posted somewhere else, there appears to be no rhyme or reason to these locations, and it is, like someone blindfolded threw darts at a map when deciding which stores to keep open.
I could go on with my examples of these oddities. There is a Kmart left in West Long Branch NJ. I lived in NJ for Many Years, but for those not familiar, that is part of The Jersey Shore, An Area, which is mostly populated from Memorial Day to Labor Day (with the exception of Atlantic City, a Year-Round Gambling town). Now, when Kmart had 2000+ stores, they could afford to have a loss-leader store such as this which would only be busy 3 Months per Year to keep customers happy. Should they run a store like that now, when there are only 5 stores left in NJ? I mean, nobody (to any significant extent) is on The Jersey Shore in December (again, other than AC).

I'm surprised they didn't close Minot ND yet. The lease was recently announced as ending. That store is about 2 miles from Target, figured it would be a no-brainer to axe that one. Also, if you look at the jobs website, the vast majority of remaining Kmarts (with some exceptions) have only Seasonal jobs. Several of them, like Mcallen Texas (the only remaining location in Texas) have ZERO (yes, ZERO) jobs available. One would have to think they are closing soon. Holyoke MA, for example, also has ZERO jobs listed, as do several of the CA go forward stores, the MT store, the NH store, and several others. If they have ZERO (not even Seasonal) jobs listed in December, you Know what's coming in January. Just Saying..............

Sorry, I made a typo in the OP. I meant the remaining 12 are in territories, not the remaining 1, obviously, LOL. So 46 in Continental US, 12 in territories (7 in PR, 4 in USVI, 1 in Guam), total 58 Kmarts left that are not closed or closing. Of course, that is only as of now, and they will be a lot more closing later, so this list is very fluid. Of course it will only move in 1 direction, that is get smaller, not larger, because no NEW Kmarts will open.

@aht Really? That's odd. Are you using a foreign VPN or something? I made the map in English, that's the only language I Know, so not sure why it's showing up in Spanish of you? Try opening a new, incognito Window on your computer and paste the URL in there. Let me try it again to make sure.

Ya I tried it, it's in English. So maybe try with a different computer? Sorry about that, not sure why it's doing that.

@12v0Eh1o-ohi... It’s easy. Closing one NC location but keeping the other open, continues to give off the impression that you’re still trying to save the company! Why else would only certain stores close.

@12v0Eh1o-ohi Now you know just how inept EL and his “management” team are. There is no logical answer to your perfectly reasonable question, just another example of the buffoonery that made Sears/Kmart fail.

Just curious as to why they would only close Raleigh NC and leave the other straggler in NC by itself. Now there are 11 states with 1 Kmart each, and 3 states that have 2 Kmarts each. Why would they leave these oddly located, far flung stores so far apart from each other? I am not sure I understand their selection process in which stores to keep open. I mean, if they're closing 1 NC store why not both? Why have odd stores in places like Montana, North Dakota, Washington State, NH, etc., that are so far away from any other store? I don't get it.

What surprises me is how spread out they are. They're not even concentrated in specific areas (other than maybe FL, NY). Even the CA stores are randomly scattered all over the place!
