Thread regarding Sears layoffs

What's the Current Store Count

I work for Sears and can check the count tomorrow.
But how many Kmarts are still on the go forward list?
Anyone know?

From Wikipedia, "At its peak in 1994, Kmart operated 2,486 stores globally, including 2,323 discount stores and Super Kmart Center locations in the United States."

So we're down to 60 out of 2486. About 2.4% of stores left, LMAO. In other words, 2426 out of 2486 (about 97.6%) of Kmarts have closed. If this were a baseball game, Kmart is down 30-0 in the bottom of the 9th, with 2 outs, nobody on, and 2 strikes. If this were a football game, they're down 40-0 with 30 Seconds left, no Timeouts, and the other team has the ball on their 10 yard line.

Just put that in perspective. Almost 98% of their peak stores closed. Why they don't put this turkey out of its misery is beyond me. Even the most loyal baseball fans, if their team was down that big in the 9th inning, would be like swing at the first pitch and get the game over with. Don't worry about bunting for a base hit or working the count. The game is over. Go home.

(I'm going to post this in a few different threads, because it seems relevant), but, I think the problem, for Kmart, anyway, is going to be brand identity. Kmart is absent in 31 states. And in 10 more states, they have 1 location each. Further, in 4 more states, there are 2 locations each. Soooooooo, in 45 states out of 50, in our great country, there are either zero, one, or two Kmarts. Most kids growing up now, will have likely never heard of this silly company. So running random stores, in far flung locations, is logistically wasteful, plus, in most zip codes, people have no connection to Kmart, and would have no reason to seek one out. If ever there was a Dead store walking, it is this.
Sears, on the other hand, will not survive in terms of full line stores, but their name will have some cache, as it lives on, with their small format stores, or whatever. But Kmart is done on the mainland. It may linger in Guam, or USVI, I guess, but that's not in the US 50 states. Further, the name will of course linger, in Australia, but Kmart Australia is a completely unrelated company.

Walmart may sell Arby’s in their frozen section, but it’s still sold through the Walmart POS. Due to the technology incapabilities, TransformCo can’t sell any of the Kmart product in “Sears” since the POS won’t recognize it; they need distinct registers in the Kmart and customers can’t bring unpaid merchandise from one to the other (to my knowledge). But I’ll concede the point at this point since it’s obvious I’m in the minority for considering it a distinct location.

@eit LOL, if you don't care about that information, than don't read it. Maybe I am OCD, who Knows? But I posted that list for those people (obviously not you) that may be interested in Knowing which stores have pharmacies, or which stores are owned by Seritage. Why? Because in leased stores, it is often easy to find on the internet, when a given lease is due to end, so one can often predict the closing that way. Stores owned by Seritage (Eddie), don't fall into this category. Damn, if you are not interested, don't read it. It's not THAT big a deal. I'm just trying to put out as much information as possible. Many on here appreciate the information. Those that don't like it? Well too bad for them, I did it anyway, so hate all you want.
Here, just for you, I color coded my public map, to show which locations still have pharmacies. Enjoy!

Would someone like to do Sears? I would if I could, but I'm not with the company and don't have Inside Knowledge that some of y'all might have. The Kmart list was fairly easy to do, because I just started with the Kmart website as a baseline, then called each store to verify which were closing, and subtracted those from what was listed on the website, and subsequently also subtracted every store that was announced as closing.
The Sears website, however, is not so cut and dry. They list hometown Sears, regular Sears, appliance Sears, etc., and the distinctions between the different kinds is (to me at least) a bit murky. With Kmart, either it's a Kmart or it isn't, but with the different types of Sears, I didn't have Enough Knowledge to be able to make that distinction between the different kinds, and which I should count, and which I shouldn't. But if someone with More Knowledge than me, wants to do that list, it would be much appreciated! I'm guessing there are now 120 locations going forward. I simply did the math, as they mentioned 182 go forward stores total, so I subtracted the 60 Kmarts, to get 122 Sears. But 2 were recently announced (Bel Air, & Beaumont) , after the big announcement, so that should chop it down to 120. If anyone Knows which 120 those are, that's the question. :)

@vow. Unless you’re OCD, what difference does it make if a store is “O”wned or has a “p”harmacy. It doesn’t change the number of remaining stores and They’re all going to close anyway.

@hzc While that's the case, the Kmart website doesn't list it as a distinct location. For the purpose of store counts, when the go forward list has 182 stores, 60 are Kmarts, 122 are Sears (now 120 with the recent closings). If I counted that Brooklyn location, and counted 61 Kmarts, that would have put the total store count at 183 (now 181). That's why I didn't double count that location as both a Sears & a Kmart.
I guess an example would be, that Walmart and other grocers, sell "Arby's", "Checkers", "White Castle", etc., products in their Frozen sections. But we wouldn't count Walmart as an "Arby's" location. They just sell a few Arbys items in their Freezer section. I think of that Kmart inside the Brooklyn Sears, in a similar way. But you're right, this will all be moot in A Few Months anyway.....

Not sure why I was downvoted. This store is distinct from the Sears it’s located in. Since the systems were never integrated after the original merger. But it still means, technically, there are 61 left. It’ll be zero soon enough.

@thp I'm not sure why Wikipedia is listing 70. I am unable to edit Wiki, because of the server I am using. If someone would like to UPDATE it with my list, be my guest. The only thing I can think of, as to why they list 70, is that the Kmart website is vastly out Dated. They have stores listed on there that haven't been open in Years. So perhaps whoever posted that "70" number on Wiki, was going off of that obsolete information on the Kmart website. But there are only these 60 stores that I listed, that are not closed or closing, not 70. And surely, that number will continue to shrink, as new closings are announced. I expect it will be zero in 2020, or maybe just Guam and Puerto Rico or something, but that's about it.

@qob If you bothered reading his entire list, including the words at the bottom, he explained exactly what the O & P are all about. Read it again.

Also, store guy, thanks so much for the list–it is great–but one little change even though I find the typo amusing: It's South Lake Tahoe, not Taco. I hope that was intentional though.

The list should also have Brooklyn on it for the Kmart-in-Sears. Otherwise it matches the store list I was using before I was laid off last week. I had 61 total.

Why does Wikipedia and other sources list 70 as the store count for Kmart? Where would they get the additional stores from?

The 6 mainland locations with letter "O" are owned by Sears, as opposed to the others which are leased. I did not bother researching the ownership status of the locations outside the mainland.
Speaking of which, Puerto Rico has 7 Kmarts, USVI has 4, Guam has 1, so 12 total stores outside of the US. 60 total Kmarts left as of now that are not closed or closing.
