If you haven't noticed, tech companies have morphed into hedge funds that make stuff for PR consumption. This happened after 2008, the really smart people are now on Wall Street, not some nerdy lab.
Don’t be surprised if You see a deal for HW division. IBM would gladly shed HW division and all, of its associated problems (channels, distributors, MSP’s, Reps/quotas etc etc). Look for a 10 year deal just like global foundries.
Notes is in the gallows and Sametime will go dark for IBM at the end of the year. It makes no difference that Slack doesn't really do what we need but at least it's supported. I've been on a Mac for two years. Notes still crashes. The rumor is we will be going to Exchange.

I think Google would be a better suitor but would raise concerns from the government that Apple may not.
5thv. IBM still brings a lot to the table especially for some of the big players. Google and Apple see real value in “some” parts of IBM. Whether it’s worth stroking the big check to get it is another question
- Enterprise introduction and z legacy farming. (both Apple and google would be interested)
- Cognitive. Google was the second place bidder for Redhat and Apple has already expressed an interest in doing AI with IBM
- GTS. Google and Apple would most likely pass on most of GTS as they view it as the execution part that they already have experience doing
- GBS. Google would definitely be interested in consulting on how to move to the cloud. Apple maybe interested in the consulting piece
- HW. Google already licenses Power and both Apple and Google would love to have Z introduce them into enterprise customers. Google is trying to grow cloud, and IBM offers 2 platforms that are unique that could contribute to growth and more importantly catalyze the Intel market. Apple could exploit the enterprise environment to introduce Apple infrastructure at the expense of Intel
- Both would love to have IBM’s labs
- Both would cherry-pick IBM’s worldwide datacenters
- IBM is a cash generating machine that both would love to acquire. The recent debt taken on would factor into the price, BUT free cash flow rules when growth in long term strategy starts to slow
Regardless of one's opinion about Apple's products, it is hard to argue that Apple is a very successful company with vibrant and enthusiastic employees.
So why on earth would they (or anyone else) want to acquire a boat anchor like IBM?
Well then maybe Apple should just acquire IBM and deploy Macs to ALL employees. Hint, hint....

Hey IBM, this is a no-brainer, convert EVERYONE to macOS. When was the last time you see 16% larger deals? This is the silver bullet to fix IBM. Get on it pronto. With BS like this no wonder the IBM AI game is so strong. It is a shame that IBM would even share this kind of non-sense fantasy.
