Thread regarding 3M layoffs

At 3M, we are committed to do the right thing, every day?

Never report anything internal to 3M. NEVER. 3M's hr, ethics hotline, and our leaders are all broken. If you report something inside of 3M, there will be a cover up, huge efforts to identify why the corporation is not liable . . . anything to make the issue go away, other than addressing the original issue. Memories are long and leaders are patient - once you report, there will be pay back. Likely a layoff. It may take a year, two, or even three.
The solution is to report 3M to a newspaper, magazine, or broadcast tip lines. The other option is to call a litigation attorney. The final option is to whistle blow to the appropriate government agency such as EEOC, EPA, FDA, DOJ, OSHA, DOD, etc.
No one outside of 3M will care about the conflict of interest issue discussed last week in IT, except possibly the supplier. You could report the issue to the supplier but that would only work if it is a larger company and they have a strong ethics program.
There is a long term story being sold inside of 3M that there is no retribution permitted. That is a lie. There is no way the ethics department can protect you in the long run. In the conflict of interest complaint in IT, the leadership of VP will maintain they knew of the relationship and there was full visibility. The next line of arguement will be that this is normal business networking and a networking relationship is not an ethics issue. You cannot trust that ethics department will win over 3M leadership. Is it possible your ethics report will succeed? Yes, but not likely. Good luck, keep your head down and do not be a hero.

@298 No one cares about or follows The Code of Conduct anymore. Why should they if our leaders do not have to follow the rules?

If someone is behaving in ways detrimental to 3M, I'm gonna be like those three monkeys "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". Tralala, I don't care.

@1jc I cannot believe Flimflam is head of Legal after such a huge mistake. Also looks like Ivan Fong jumped ship when he saw the ship starting to sink. Legal seems to be a mess under Flimflam.

@1hy The Aero director who signed the infamous memo that started the lawsuits was promoted during the peak of combat arms litigation.

@1hy

Flimflam joined 3M in the early 2000s and eventually became the head of the IP department. That IP department filed the patent suit in 2012. By 2018 3M settled with the military for selling defective earplugs opening the floodgates for lawsuits. In early 2022, 3M’s then Chief Legal Officer Ivan Fong fled to Medtronic, with Flimflam taking over.

@10c How did the Head of Legal get promoted after making such a huge mistake? I made a small error (responding to an email late) and my manager verbally attacked me and never lets me forget I made the mistake. I guess peons like me cannot make mistakes but if you are an executive it is okay?

The new 'management by quarter' crowd is more and more willing to bend the rules to bring orders in to try to make OP.

@zd Amazing that the head of legal is still there. He creates this mess with ill advised IP case and has cost the company billions. Read about it here:

Bill Brown talks about accountability, why not start here.

@pj The old white man seems to be able to do whatever he wants to do. HR will never take action against him. BB would ignore any ethics complaint against the old white man brought to his attention.

How do we report this?

The old white man in legal affairs took renee Dotson and Shauna Macdougal on the most brazen boondoggle to the uk to attend his daughter’s wedding. On 3M’s money!! Yes that just happened. Renee was stupid enough to paste it all over viva (now deleted) ironically the comments are still there. Look for posts on July 16. She also has another gushing post worth seeing…

Document. Write everything down while it's fresh, get copies of emails, etc. Do it now.

I filed an ethics complaint and HR/Ethics took no action. I am pretty sure I will face retaliation at some point. Had I known what I know now through this site I would never have filed the complaint. I also found out the person who was the subject of the complaint has many friends in high places. It is much more convenient and easier to get rid of me than address the issues raised in my complaint.

@OP it took a brave few employees, one technical person in particular, to challenge Jimbo Mcnerney plan to promote the under 35 crowd by giving them choice Sick Sigma roles (MBB) that were then promoted to a higher role after a 2 to 3 year stint in 6S. Michael Vale is the poster child of that very movement. Suing 3M for age discrimination took guts but forced them to settle after Jimbo took to bumbling things up at Boeing. More of that is needed now! Too many people here have heard stories about people being targeted at age 53 or 54 to greatly diminish their pension. Same for people just under the 91 number (years plus age). BB needs a jolt from attorneys to disrupt his 20 million gig whilst living on a yacht.
