Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

This is the beginning of the end

You need to have an amazing CEO and C-suite to recover from something like this. We have neither.

Blame it on Wall Street and consulting firms working for the board and investor's short term interests - along with spineless C-level mgmt.

The fall of Intel is like the fall of the Baltimore bridge. Great American pillars destroyed by a boatload of Indians.

@ypn

Strongly disagree on Intel foundry succeeding even in the long term.

Fabs require large upfront capex.
They need huge volumes to recover investment, especially at the leading edge.
No volume = dead company

x86 volumes have been flat for 15 years.
Furthermore, the x86 business is under duress from competitors using better transistors at TSMC like AMD and Apple and soon Qualcomm. Take a look at how Epyc is destroying Xeon and how Apple laptop chips run circles around Intel. Even Intel must use TSMC just to tread water.

There is no internal silicon growth driver so Intel needs to do foundry to gain external product volumes. Can Intel bleed cash for 6 years to ‘catch up’ to TSMC?
Why does anyone believe Intel could catch up?
It’s not like TSMC is just going to roll over. They have more money and scale to stay ahead and all of the incentives in the world to do so.

TSMC has many advantages that are difficult to compete with

  • much better capitalized
  • much better ecosystem and IP libraries
  • much better customer support and focus
  • long track record of meeting targets
  • no conflict of interest
  • lower cost of production
  • better economy of scale
  • all of the best, most highly capitalized customers funding their R&D
  • last but not least … superior technology

Intel would be lucky to get to #3 or #4 foundry as even Samsung scores better on many of the above metrics. Being a distant third does not justify the massive spending.

Sooner or later, investors will lose patience and call in their bets.

at this point the foundry service is the only thing that can save intel .
intel own products are sh-t , as simple as that.
even when manufactured on tsmc node , the products are still sh-t .
all graphics processors are manufactured on tsmc node , and they are uncompetitive sh-t.
x86 is dying slowly , no match for current arm products .
intel missed on everything - mobile , risc , euv , automotive self driving tech and currently AI .
i hate it when the company talks about AI , you have no damn products , forget AI you fu--ing missed the train again .
always chasing the ball , pathetic .
at least IFS relies on other equipment manufacturers and vendors , this is why it can actually work .

Yes. I would characterize it as -- and we're engaged with several customers. And as we talked about, we thought we could get what we call a whale done…
Chris Danely
Will this be a whale?
Dave Zinsner
By the end of the year, this will be a whale, by the end of the year on 18A.

So… where’s the whale?
I assume the 7B operating loss includes this mythical creature?

@pxo, fab probably has the best chance of becoming a sustainable business given enough time and the right geopolitical circumstances. Intel products are pretty marginal at best and they cost a lot more than the competition. Intel hasn’t been competitive across all facets of the industry for a long time. Intel needs to rethink everything. It’s possible to fix but it will take a long time and the current plan probably won’t do it unless the competition stands still for the next five years. Good luck with that… this has been a long time coming.

Would they be able to successfully push this loss-making foundry service out to the stock market? Then it becomes someone else's problem.
