If you are looking at it objectively from business point of view, it's a good thing. Unlike Samsung, Hynix, or Micron, WD-Kioxia don't have DRAM, only NAND. With the merge, WD-Kioxia will have 2nd largest market share after Samsung leaving Hynix and Mircon behind. I bet on Micron merge after that. NAND/SSD will always be important form of storage for a while and very unlikely any government would let single player in Samsung to take over. My prediction will be 3 major players at the end, Samsung, Hynix, and the combination of whatever left of the US-based NAND manufacturer.

Tie two failing rocks together and what do you get? One heavier rock that will sink faster. This merger is a last ditch effort for both companies to survive. If this merger is seriously going to happen, it will benefit the investors who want ROI on their investments - they are tired of waiting for leadership to do their jobs. So, when this happens (if it happens) , both companies will look at every department and employee on both sides and pick the lighter rock to see if they can prolong the inevitable sinking of the company. Too little and way to late.

Hurry up and merge, so this POS can prolong it's eventual death.

Seems like they could keep the brand, and just sell off chunk off the ownership, keeping the brand seems like a no-brainer to me.

@vrc+1mDZ8U9G, I think it's very likely and it makes sense for both parties.

Kioxia Holdings Corp and Western Digital Corp (WDC.O) are speeding up merger talks and nailing down a deal structure, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said, as a slumping flash memory market puts fresh consolidation pressure on the world's No. 2 and No. 4 players.
