Thread regarding Cengage layoffs

This time last year

Around this time last year Cengage laid off a number of people. Anyone know if there are layoffs coming before the end of the year?

Yes. If you don’t like Kool-Aid this is not the gig for you. If on the other hand you thrive in a sycophantic environment with bottomless drink cups then by all means get back to your mind numbing spreadsheets and data-driven busy work.

Are you aware MH’s wife recently passed away? While I don’t agree with all executive decisions that have been made, Cengage is still in business with many benefitting from that. The solution is simple ‘if you don’t like the program, change the channel’.

I, and I’m sure many others, don’t call dishonesty “working the system.” Behavior like that put many honest people out of jobs. It’s morally reprehensible. Certainly it’s not the only reason we’re in this mess, but it’s a big contributing factor. Too bad employers can’t weed out sh–ty people.

@1xrq+180TXDqH. I don't know why this point is so hard to get across. MH ONLY cares about himself and his family. He doesn't lose a bit of sleep over putting people out of work. He looks at it like its going to be him and his family, or a bunch of faceless people who he will never see again, he chooses himself and his family each time.

Cengage is in this situation not because people worked the system but because they and everyone else in the industry set up a culture where profs can get whatever the hell they want with absolutely no skin in the game.

If I were MH, I literally would not be able to live with myself. Good for him, and Happy Holidays to him and his family.

Sounds like a really horrible person and one of the reasons we’re in this mess.

You are 100% correct. It will happen.

Ah for the good ol days when you spent the holidays begging bookstores for orders that you knew would be returned while Sr. Management stuffed every distributor to the gills with books at 70% discounts. And then everyone would get plastered at the Jan. NSM.

I actually miss those days. Years ago, there was a rep who had several bookstore managers as friends. This is when software all CD's and sold in boxes. He had his bookstore buddies order several hundred thousand dollars of software. I think it was Maple.

The beauty is, the dimwitted NSM at the time, sent a broadcast email to the entire sales team about how awesome this guy was and how "this was how you worked your bookstores to bring in sales."

In February, the rep pocketed a massive bonus check.

In March he resigned for a competitor.

In April, 100% of those orders were returned.

Darn this used to be such an awesome business.

I’m actually surprised it hasn’t happened yet.

It wouldn't be Cengage without Holiday layoffs! Expect cuts in sales as Cengage transitions to a digital model that eliminates reps going out to any campuses and instead triples schools onto one rep in an office. Also expect more and more outsourcing of the MindTap assembly process, which actually should have been done years ago.
