Thread regarding USAA layoffs

Tragic incident

Wow, has it gotten this bad where an employee took their own life on campus? Just, wow.

What employees are being told is to shut up and not talk about it. That all the news about this is false and not to watch or listen to the news about this. They said their media department will release a statement as to the truth if what happened
In other words they are covering it up and trying to spin it to where they are not at fault. If you do question what they say you will be ripped a new one and be considered a trouble maker.

I was with usaa for almost 7 years. From day one, you are reminded how lucky you are to have a job there.
My mental and physical health started to decline, and I was fired for paperwork not being completed in time by my physician.
I was seeing a therapist weekly, a psychiatrist monthly to regulate my anxiety and depression.
In March when I was fired, I cashed out everything and continued to seek treatment for a handful of health issues along with the mental health issues. I was able to get a surgery I needed very much, but paying $960/month to keep cobra after surgery wasn’t sustainable.
So now I have no health insurance.
I’m attempting the disability application process and find myself homeless.
I had to make a decision to pay my rent or cobra this month, and was evicted.
They don’t care about their employees, they care about your metrics.

First and foremost, my deepest and sincere condolences to the family of the employee/contractor. USAA is all for profit now and does not care for their employees. Board of directors need to get the current CEO out. This company is going down quick since he took office. They claim to have great benefits for employees and they do not. The performance bonus has been declining and not worth the stress to work for this company anymore. It’s not like it was when McDermott or Gen Robles were there. So many companies out there have way better benefits and more pay. The performance bonus is a gimmick. The leaders are phonies and pretend to be helping you perform and assist with meeting your goals including promotions and do nothing only care about how good employees under them make them look and take the credit. The company is outsourcing, laying off, and terminating employees left and right. They will use you to perform your current job until they are ready to move with the third party company taking over your role and then you get a message via Skype or email to let you know your manager or director need to schedule a quick meeting in the morning and be told your job has been eliminated. If they want to lay you off or terminate you, management will add false feedback/comments in your performance evaluation just to have a reason to let you go if needed. Many of the employees are waiting to be let go to receive a severance package and be done with this company.

This place is similar to a cult in that you need to follow their "mission" which really doesn't benefit service members at all. Leadership doesnt give a cr-p about the military or the workers all they care about is lining their own pockets.

The email we got from Wayne is disgusting. The piggy back email from Randy was more so.
Being a veteran who has lots fellow soldiers to su----e, I am angry and disgusted at how our leadership has handled this situation. This hits extremely close and I'm frustrated and angry.
This could easily be me. I've recently been prescribed anxiety medication. I've never had to take medication of this caliber. I must confess, I've contemplated the same. This place, I think, pushes people to that point.

While I have prior insurance background, it doesn't matter at USSA. We are put through subpar training that does not include real sales training. Oh, yeah...I've been here less than a year and I am fully burnt out.

One thing USAA is good at: making things disappear. Money talks. I get news outlets don't really report su----es, but they do when they are high profile. One of the largest companies in San Antonio? First loss in its history and over a billion dollars? Record low employee retention? Do not let this man die in vain. This was a very loud message and it's tragic that it had to get this far. Never ending prayers to his loved ones.

The Haunting at the Home Office begins. I wouldn't want to stay late there, specially never park to where that incident happened. Which garage would that be?

I too worked for USAA for decades. Then they sold their investment business and forced both myself and many others out. This after I moved across the
Country just to stay with USAA when they closed offices. They have gone down hill since. Laying people off, forcing people out, cutting benefits and bonuses. They were once a company that you worked for till you retired, but not anymore. They are no different than any other company. There is no close loyalty for a company that you feel proud to work for. Their problem is as the members get older and pass away, they have done nothing for the younger people to give them positive thoughts or loyalty. They will go as seara, montgomery wards and Kodak before them. They will disappear because they no longer get cared and didn't grow.

What did the note say! If there was anything about USAA in there why don't you honor this person by publishing it. All the abusive t-u-r-d-s at usaa are closing ranks yapping about this person's privacy and lamenting speculation. They do not give a half eaten urinal cake about anyone's flipping privacy they're just scared because they know the wind is changing, the clouds are gathering, and a storm of employee discontent is about to unleash heck!

There are no reputable news outlets reporting a g-nshot. Who? SNBC and rajasdentaloffice? They were found unresponsive outside the parking garage. The individual texted a coworker that were going to jump and they found their car abandoned at the top of the garage with a note.

Job loss is no joke. I once contemplated on going that tragic route when I was let go from my dream job a few years ago. Thankfully, and by the Grace, I overcame it, and still here. I can relate to what happened. My sincerest condolence and support to the family and friends.

After reading the numerous replies to this thread, it really shows that there is a heavy trend of unhappy workers within the company..

We post anonymously because that protects us and our positions within the company, but the only way things will change is if we work together to enact change.

USAA can’t fire every single employee.

It’s not feasible. As individuals, sure. We can get replaced.. but working together towards a common goal is how proper change happens.

My spouse recently left USAA. They just told me about someone jumping off the roof on Saturday. Prior to this, a former colleague told my spouse that someone else committed su----e at their desk in the last few weeks before the Saturday incident. I can’t find information about this one and I am devastated for their grieving families.

My heart breaks for the employee who felt this was the only solution. It indicates how Toxic and stressful the environment has become and the leadership only cares about their bonuses and job security. They don’t care about who is actually in the trenches actually fighting the fight. Let them work 1 day in our shoes with us judging them and let’s see if changes are made!!!

While there's no formal confirmation it was su----e by g-nshot, I think the comments in disbelief that there would be a g-n on campus are incredibly naive. It's not as if they roll your vehicle through an x-ray machine when you drive onto campus. There's likely tons of vehicles with firearms parked all over corporate office all the time.

If it happened friday & body wasn't found until saturday that hints towards NOT a g-n if it happened at a time others in the garage would have heard the g-n shot. So it could have been pills/alcohol. It's none of our business but I'd like to be able to donate to a fundraiser if the family wants that.

The environment is now toxic, large amounts of layoffs, lots of tenured employees have been put on write ups significantly, fired and the benefits for EAP are not great. Goals have changed to make it impossible to hit and achieve and earn your bonus, especially this year since the company is underperforming. Company is pushing return to office. Company is no longer member focused, but money focused.

I’m not convinced there was a g-n on campus. I was anxious about this initially as well. But Wayne’s email does not indicate that and all the news articles being referenced are questionable. There is more to learn before we jump to conclusions. I really don’t think there was a firearm involved.
My condolences to family and friends and coworkers. My heart is very heavy today.

The only thing that will make a difference is when we unionize. I know there are some bad thoughts about having a union, but we have no bargaining position without one. We should reach out to the local labor leaders to help us get this started.

My question is why are they trying to reassure employees that there was no g-n and all is safe on campus? Multiple media outlets state that it’s a g-nshot wound to the head. USAA is encouraging employees to strike down those saying it was a su----e by g-nshot calling it fake news. So if no g-n why no statement from USAA? Just a crummy email to the employees. This is sad and never did I think I’d see such a thing.

The real concern is now we know anyone can bring a g-n onto campus what if some decides they want to cause harm to others instead?

@1toc+1ojrpugs Just because there is a sign that says "no g-ns allowed" doesnt mean you cant physically bring one. Security doesn't do body cavity searches.

This is heartbreaking. And I bet Usaa takes zero accountability for this. The USAA that once was is no more. The management all the way up to Wayne is a disgrace to the USAA name and brand.

There is not ONE claims representative that enjoys going to work everyday. The stress is unreal. Work of 3-4 adjusters with zero change in expectations. Members mad all day everyday about things we have no control over and managers that have zero understanding of the tasks they require.

This is horrible news, but not surprising to anyone that works there.

This is extremely painful and I offer only my most sincere thoughts and prayers to the family.

That said, I can’t help but wonder if USAA isn’t overdo for a walkout?
• Bonuses have been reduced
• Reduced shift diff
• Performance pressure is some of the highest it’s been
• Too many out of touch managers & managers that don’t care about their team
• Highly increased pressure from membership regarding premiums and standards
• A broken 3P call center loaded with representatives that couldn’t be bothered to care about membership
• Massive decline in quality of service
• Running the good workers & managers ragged
• No real ways to assist elderly with member authentication leading to very disgruntled membership
• A claims department that consistently fails to keep membership properly informed of open claims, and almost seems to avoid callbacks like the plague.
• Lately, PIPs have been getting handed out like candy to employees not even in the red with their performance.
• Random & indefinite shut downs of 7 & 30 day PTO.
• Escalating to a manager can actually get you in trouble

The list of things wrong is extensive. Exhaustive.. and this isn’t even everything wrong with the company. I can only hope that what happened can open the eyes of lower ranked employees and upper management alike.

And if management can’t see past their own ego or “the benefit of the company” long enough to consider reform, then hopefully enough of the front line employees will get fed-up enough to spark a change together.

that's a good point actually. for anyone considering it, please don't feed into this with any contagion or consider themselves a martyr. the company probably can't be saved in its current form (might survive if they sell the bank), and hopefully wayne will get the boot anyway soon.

With rare exceptions, it is standard practice in San Antonio not to run news stories of su----es to avoid “su----e contagion”, so no surprise it was not in the local news.
But what a sad day for this person, their friends and family, and their co-workers. Many people have been affected by this. Prayers for all.

All the current leadership needs to go !!! They are heartless and only focus on numbers - yes you have to have productivity but the way they treat people to get it is ridiculous. They need to bring all the leadership that has left and been let go who understood the culture and how to LEAD employees to save their company!

I found it extremely odd that no San Antonio news outlet had shared the story as well. Yes, it could have been the request of the family, which Wayne stated in his note, the family had been notified. But I have always found it odd the news outlets in town knew about our bonus before we did! But somebody takes their life and nothing anywhere in the news!

If you have not been manipulated by a manager, then you have no idea how that person was feeling. He may have had a home, car payments, and children to support. If you have a narcissistic manager beating you down everyday, you start to believe you are worthless. You start second guessing everything you do, because they are always right and you are wrong. You give any pushback, then you have a target ion your back. Trust me I know. I have done claims for many years and never suffered from depression, anxiety and stress the way I have under this type of manager. We have been tasked with helping other areas in the company do their job, because they are so far behind. I wasn’t hired to do the work of 3 people. But if you can’t get all your work done, it is your fault. The co-worker calls for other levels not taking their calls due to the volume, was 1/2 our workday or more! Then Matthew Stewart says they have realized some adjusters have gotten more files then other adjusters and they’re going to fix it! Actions speak louder than words! USAA hired Allcat to help with property damage and that crashed and burned! So now more work back to the adjusters who are already overloaded. You are never going to see these outside companies give the same care for our members, , which have no commitment to our customers, that have or are currently serving our country. I came to work everyday and gave 150% because I cared about our members, but it meant nothing to management.

If you are fired and USAA denies you unemployment, just share all the comments listed here on this site to unemployment I feel Unemployment will see things your way. This many people saying the same thing is not disgruntled people, it is people who have no work/life balance.

I personally feel a manager should know their employees. They should have been able to see something was going on with their employee. What was his reaction when he was told he was being let go. But we are all just number, we can all be replaced. Get the work done, even though the expectations are clearly unreasonable. When the phone rings continuously in some areas from the minute you sign on to the phone, until you shut down at the end of the day, how long do you think that employee will last. They have had minimal training and don’t know how to handle upset people, which seems to be the norm now at USAA.

So unless you have walked in someone else’s shoes, you surely can’t judge what this employee was feeling. You don’t have to have mental issues, but could have been bullied by a manager to get the job done, that was impossible due to the situation currently going on with USAA. I promise you, that will wear on anyone! When it is so bad you tell your boss, you know now why kids in school who are bullied commit su----e and it goes right over your head, that manager is no longer suitable for that position. Managers now lead by fear at USAA, pretty sure if the tables were turned they would not like it!

I think the USAA train has derailed and leadership has some explaining to do. Stop blaming the problems on everything in the world, and be accountable. My manager would say, I don’t want any excuses, and I wanted him to tell him to stick a sock in it. Because when he made a mistake, he always had an excuse!!!! No more excuses leadership team, start realizing you have let us down and fix it!

My heart goes out to this employee and his family. My prayers are with them. I feel he was sending a message doing this at work! Of course we have no info, so we can’t even start a Go Fund Me account for them to help their family. I am sure the family is going to need counseling to deal with their loss.

It’s so sad when a Company pushes people to their limits, constantly stressing you have to make your numbers and when you do they complain why wasn’t better? You reach a pay level, they say they’re downsizing, and then they have a big hiring event. They keep Managers that aren’t team players, are overly critical, and unresponsive to personal requests. They threaten you with your livelihood unless you perform like a robot and do not say anything that can be construed as criticism. They say they care about their employees but your just a number and someone will take place. The pressure they put on you has caused employees to leave on Doctors orders due to stress or stress induced migraines. It’s a shame someone couldn’t see there is Life outside of USAA and it’s beautiful!

Wayne sent out an email saying for employees to check on each-other. This is pretty upsetting! They take zero accountability!! All they’ll ever do is sweep everything under the rug…and there’s no way they aren’t paying news outlets here hush money. If employees talk they get in trouble for it, so how do they check on each-other exactly? USAA THIS IS YOUR PULSE SURVEY! It all falls on deaf ears anyway:(
