Thread regarding 2U Inc. layoffs

I’m (oddly) at peace.

It’s pretty clear this business is done… which is what it is. I’m probably coming from a place of privilege but I am at peace.

I will continue to do my job and what is expected of me, but not go above and beyond, while looking for my next move. Don’t be afraid to start reaching out to your network and being honest, it’s public knowledge by a quick google.

No hope of severance, so I’m banking as much as possible because unemployment won’t cover it.

I fear people who don’t frequent this website are not prepared for the reality so please do your best, discreetly, to help them realize the gravity of this situation so they and their families are prepared.

Good luck.

Pro tip for anyone who’s got a side hustle in spicy content or worked at a place that doesn’t look great on a resume with limited work history and a need to pad your resume, look at your paycheck, W2, or 1099 to see if they have an LLC and use that name instead, or make something up and say they’re out of business now. Alternatively, use something like “client entertainment agency/leisure events management” and church it up, but say you signed an NDA when you left and don’t provide contact info. Could also use Google voice and screen calls, never answer unknown numbers people, it’s 2024. Companies lie to people all the time, protect yourself first and be smart about it. Also keep in mind that how they treat you at the interview will be the nicest they ever treat you again, trust your gut.

You really don’t even need to say 2U at all, saying edX is legitimate if you worked on that side and represented yourself that way. It’s not uncommon to have a business name that’s public facing and have a private LLC behind the scenes with a slightly or totally different name. I’ve seen this a few times with past employers too and it was never an issue, don’t sweat it.

I listed myself as edX/2U, with edX first (even though I didn’t come from edX) and would advise others to do same. Chip said we were edX, so it’s true! Do lean into their credible history before it gets too spoiled.

The reality is, from someone in past layoffs, 2U holds a negative reputation with some hiring managers out there, so expect to be overlooked as a result of something that’s not your fault. It makes the search just that much more challenging.

Fire up LinkedIn. Update your resume and profile asap. The market cap and volume of the stock are indicators of a Penny stock from he-l. Don’t work just apply and get out!

Post ID: @xvp+1r47ewiZ, that's only one of the renaming options being considered. Others, " IneverknewU" and "WhoU".

I recently came to the realization that I'm substantially underpaid and it makes me feel better to know that my next job, whenever it comes around, will probably pay better.
