Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

How close are we to targets?

Have we achieved the targeted layoff percentages? 15% in USA?

15% is only the first phase target. We were told reductions would continue through 2024. This is the target to get the Business Technology Center in India fully functional and expected to absorb most of the engineering responsibility for the company world wide, but especially USA.

I make it a point to test the market. I even have a reminder on my personal calendar. Keeps me sharp and either thankful for what I have or identifies the next better job. I was an experienced hire with ExxonMobil bit have done this for years. Try it. It really helps with the mental well being I find. No one has ever forced me to stay at my job. If I find a better ken I jump. If I can’t find a better one I stay. I am surprised by many of the posts here. I thought I was normal but seems many on this board thought once they were hired by ExxonMobil all their worries were over. Hard to confront the reality that isn’t the way the world works I guess. Talk to an experienced hire if you trust one. You may be surprised by what they have to say. Layoffs are part of life. If you didn’t realize that until now be thankful for the time you had not worrying. Welcome to the real world.

I wasn’t planning to leave but started looking externally just in case. I found a new role I am really stoked about and will be resigning mid month. Could have gone either way but am glad I started looking and preparing. Never rest on your laurels or someone else will eat your lunch. It is the way things work.

If you aren’t preparing for an exit you really should. Seven if you decide to stay you willl be better for having prepared and thought through what skills you should be focused on developing etc

How do you run a company where everyone is good at brown nosing and your talent goes elsewhere? Seems to me like this is what is causing ExxonMobil’s rapid decline.

Just wait, your turn will come sooner or later. Just, you will be let go mid-career to search for your own employment with the only marketable skill being you can shove your nose so far up your managers a– that you can check for prostate cancer.

@jgo

Would be shocked that you could still smell the coffee after all the brown nosing.

If the object of the game is to win by brown-nosing, I will strive to be the best brown-noser in the company. Brown nose, full bank account. Clean nose, can't pay bills. What's your choice? Grow up, children, it's called the real world. The "work" part of your job is the a—kissing. Some refuse to do it, and no matter how much work ethic or technically proficient they are, they will be gone. So smart, yet so dumb.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Considering the company statement said "15% through the end of 2021," I'd say no.

I always found it very revealing how in these situations, they have former managers "gear down" to technical roles when things are tight! Again demonstrating the superiority complex that exists with many managers, as they feel they can excel in technical jobs, despite being away from a technical role for decades in some cases. My experience is that this has been a disaster! Most of the managers I've seen were "promoted" to the management route because they were useless technically, but very good at the smoke and mirrors politics side of things! Most of these managers will be hopelessly out of their depth in a technical role. Let's see how this plays out!

Yes, the reorganization is coming with a new round of layoffs in 1H21.

Find a high level sponsor before it’s too late.

Let the bureaucratic brown nosing begin!!

With consolidation of BUs there will be a need to find places for displaced senior managers. This will trickle down to those lower on the org chart as senior managers will be protected by displacing more junior roles on the org chart. Those with less pull who can’t find a spot in the org chart will be fired.

Not yet. Prepare for round 2 the reorg. It is disgusting they aren’t being transparent that this isn’t over. PIPs are right around the corner. But first the reorg is coming with layoffs.
