Someone put a blurb on Wiki that there will be 12 stores left after 2021. Have to scroll down quite a bit to find it, but it's there.

Not sure why hanging up a sign that states "Big Kmart" would cause bankruptcy. It was just a minor signage change. My name is Bill, if I call myself "Big Bill", not sure how it makes a huge difference.

Ya'll crazy, Kmart's heyday was the 70's. After that they made stupid decision after stupid decision after stupid decision. First was in the 80's buying up dozens of companies. Then, the 90's was the most stupid with Big Kmart- that move was so stupid, it sent them into bankrtuptcy! After that, Lampert used his own money to buy them out of bankruptcy, then sold their stores to Sears to raise more money (he used a large amount of his own to buy Kmart), and they bought Sears with it. Kmart hasn't been popular since the 70's, and if they hadn't wasted money on buying stores, then made the stupid decision to waste money converting to "Big Kmart" they wouldn't have even gone bankrupt! Downvote this comment all you want, it's all fully true, and because you can't handle the truth, you quickly down vote it!

Kmart to Acquire Sears in $11 Billion Deal - Chicago Tribune

The idea for a combined company first arose when they were in talks about Sears' purchase of 50 Kmart stores earlier this year, he said. The new company is expected to have $55 billion in annual ...

Hers the way I remember it. But then again, I wish my memory was better. Let’s put this whole, who bought who BS aside.
It was a merger.

Sears bought properties from Kmart who was just coming out of bankruptcy.
This allowed Kmart to buy Sears stock to merge the two companies. It was done this way, for financial reasons. Kmart on its own at that time, could not of bought Sears without selling some properties

That was what I remember. If someone with “inside” information can verify or correct, please do so.

"• sorry I meant "to" reflect, not "tp" reflect.

I didn't catch that. In which post was that?

@xll+1dK8C802 Exactly right. No idea why those persist on the site.

Amway, that brings me to my larger point. I'm glad this article was written. Edward Lampert has, for YEARS, tried to obscure the Kmart (and probably also Sears) counts. He wants to hide the fact that there are a pathetically few amount of stores left. Our very own "Jack Man?" (whoever he is, or whatever he's called) has been single-handedly trying to shine Light on the fact that those counts on their site was inaccurate, FOR YEARS (I think I read his first list here, around 2019, I think, maybe earlier?). Nice to see some major news outlets now, also shining Light on the accurate store counts. Thanks, Jack, for keeping the accurate store counts afloat for many Years, and thanks to this article's author, at CNN, for actually backing up our man Jack, with evidence and facts. Ed can't hide his counts forever, thanks to Jack, and CNN, these counts are out in the open, for everyone to see.

Bottom line, just as Jack stated in another thread, 12 Kmarts, only 6 of which are stateside. Be honest, Lampert, and update your website tp reflect this. You can't hide this stuff now, it's everywhere. Thanks again, Jack, you persevered, handled all the naysayers, took a licking and kept on ticking. You always upheld the highest journalistic standards, and never accepted a closing without evidence or links. How many clowns have we had on here, posting id!0tic, fake closings, about Avenel, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Jersey City, Tukwila, so many others? But you NEVER accepted that nonsense without links. You got pilloried for insisting that stores aren't closing without proof. But you persevered and never gave up. You are that Quarterback who has 7 people rushing at you, but you hold your ground, stay strong, and in the middle of battle, still throw that touchdown pass. Your list has always been perfect, and it's great to see you get recognition from major outlets now. You are the ONLY person here, whose lists were 100% accurate, 100% of the Time, because you upheld journalistic standards. Thank you Jack. I wish I Knew who you were in real life, so I could buy you some Cold Ones. 12 Kmarts, on we go.......

The article mentions six already-closed Kmarts that the company hasn't yet removed from its Store Locator. These are Freedom CA, South Lake Tahoe CA, Key Largo FL, Marathon FL, Bronx NY (Bruckner Blvd), and New York NY (Astor Place).

You are correct. Kmart bought Sears. These journalists leave a lot to be desired at times.

"Kmart is owned by Sears, which purchased the chain out of bankruptcy in 2005" . Wasn't it the other way round, Kmart bought Sears?

This is a superb article. Thank you for sharing it. He is 1 of the few journalists to get every aspect of the Kmart counts 100% right. Someone might wish to cite this as a source to update the store counts on Kmart's wiki page, because they are very fussy about any evidence without valid sources. I'd be happy to do it myself, but since my computer uses a proxy, my network is not eligible to edit wikipedia for some reason.
