Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Will Tech Ever be an “Employees Market” Again?

It may be difficult to see from where we’re sitting at Intel, but recent news tells us the rate of Tech layoffs is declining. Will it ever return to the days of too many open jobs, not enough employees?

I anticipate headwinds to ever experiencing this again. Implementations of AI for automating tasks and more, laid-off government workers and another million feet on the street seeking employment, the growth of skilled workforces and innovation abroad (China). I’ve been surprised in the past, hoping we can stoke the coals enough to return to greatness, but I’m also investigating new career options and where future growth/opportunities reside. Not everyone is suited to Real Estate Agent as a second career. New Year, new way of thinking for me. Thoughts?

Only if you are in the AI field.

There are definitely always open jobs but they just won’t hire former Intel employees

Tech will always be a great market for those with the needed skills. If you feel the market is soft it may be more about your skillset than the market.

Nope. Both sides of our crony-capitalist government want to plug all vacancies with the H1-B visa program.

There aren’t enough people with the right skills willing to work for peanuts to fill them.

Fixed it for ya!

Tech job market has historically been bo-m or bust. But this one feels different because the general economy is ok. The tech recession, as we all know is caused by pandemic hiring hangover, AI spend, even as economy has been recovering, “efficiency” initiatives, and greed. The other factor is 100k freshly minted CS bachelors every year (vs. 10k 40 years ago). H1B hiring, offshoring. I have no idea when this tech recession will end, is it a blip, or worse.

will "Tech" create anything new anymore or just keeping trying
to make money off the cheapest labor, i.e. plantations

There aren’t enough people with the right skills to fill them.

So, let's not try to upskill them but discard them, roll over them, and move on.

After the dotcom bust, the tech job market was very bad for about 5 years....from 2000 until about 2005. Things really didn't get going again until '08 or '09. And the industry was much smaller 20 years ago. Tech hiring will ramp back up again but it is a long, slow build and a lot of it depends on cheap money to fuel VC-induced IPO bubble manias. As always in tech, the industry will look different in 5 years. A lot of people left tech in the early 2000s and I suspect it's the same now. I guess it depends on your age, your financial situation and how badly you really want to stay in tech. If you have skills, resources and the desire to stay, you can probably do it. I've seen some people get jobs easily and others struggle for months. Perhaps not a coincidence, many of the people who struggle are on the older side.

AI could create new areas for employment, if its monopoly by the few big players can be broken off. It not only eliminates low value white collar jobs, but also creates a new base for ideas and jobs to develop.

It is. It’s booming in other areas. But we are Intel. People don’t want to touch us with a ten foot pole

H1B will meet the need for tech workers in the US.

AI will make everyone a Intel worker and it is just a matter of time for sure.
