I certainly believe this, wouldnt be the first time its happened.
Manager here as well. Never have I been given this instruction.
PIP = Mgmt Weapon
PIP can be a useful tool to structure performance improvements in normal conditions.
The tool has been weaponized so that minor transgressions are documented without verbal warning or opportunity to correct. It is a valid tactic to get something on record where there is nothing. If this happens to you it means your area and you in particular are marked for termination. When forced ranks are applied the pip people will fall to the bottom .
Not saying all pips are wrong just that this is a powerful weapon for the corporation in times of stress.
An employee given a PIP (performance improvement plan) is a sign of a lack of adequate training for the job position and a Manager who likely does not have the skills for the job themselves, or does not take the time, to train the employee in the skills required for the job position.

This would be an easy lawsuit the bank would loose.
Do you think they are so ethically refined that they would stop ill actions from happening just because they may be crossing the legal line?

This is straight from the IBM playbook. No joke. So aging workers will have some blemish and thus less standing should this wind up in court.
