Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Seriously, do we unionize? (HR is going to downvote)

I'm asking in regards to Fab 8 specifically. Conditions here are the worst I have ever seen, why are we not unionizing? Is anyone even interested in it or do we just collectively sigh and ingest the same PR garbage by the upline management and HR, day in and day out?

"Go somewhere else."
No! Why should I? Why should you? When we work these long thankless shifts to pad the pocket of our managers and the executive suite year after year just to be told there is no room in the budget for a cost of living increase? No schedule flexibility? Having to move our families and homes because "this industry is cyclical." What happened to the American dream of doing a good day's work, being able to have stability in your job to work until retirement while being able to provide for your family? Why are we just accepting to get kicked around and replaced every 2 years. Working like a robot and doing the job of 2 to 3 people while still being asked for more... If you defend this company ask yourself why!? Why defend the people who would send you on the streets the next day because of rising energy costs instead of them taking a payout from their 25million in stocks per quarter. instead try to make this place better for everyone. Make it a place that is the shining star of the semiconductor industry, not a copy and paste heartless steel and flourescent lighting sweatshop. And If you are tired, if you do want this place to have spirit, a place where we can accomplish the American dream, tell me! Let's protect ourselves! Let's stop this abusive behavior on the workers. Let's unionize.

Every worker in the new Advanced Packaging and Photonics Center should be union. Let’s get it before that building is built

Was about to downvote you but only because the truth hurts. Staying on shift with an hourly salary is a dead end.

Not sure if unionizing is the answer. However increased advocacy at the team level is absolutely needed.

Let’s assume we’re talking about all hourly employees at F8 (that’s likely where union talk would originate). You work hard, you actually care, and you’re considerate of your coworkers. Yet, you don’t feel seen, appreciated, appropriately compensated, etc…

Generally your managers can’t differentiate your skill set from your shift mate simply bc your manager has no way to compare (they likely weren’t the rockstar team member leading up other promo to shift manager - just that the team needed an msm and they were easiest to lose from the floor - sorry, this has been my experience for the last 7 years at GF). I’m an MTS in the central Eng org so I don’t have a dog in the fight either way - just speaking experience.

Anyhow - I was talking about the hard worker, but what about the turds on your shifts? Especially the long service ones, the “senior guys” who don’t care at all and don’t do anything? If we unionized tomorrow they’d still get paid more than the hard workers.

IMO the issue lies in your managers needing input on your performance from people that aren’t you. Did you know that you can solicit feedback from any employee during review period? If you’re kicking a-s, have your EEs tell your manager. You must not only advocate for yourself but you must have others advocate on your behalf as well.

If you want to stay at F8 and have a little more freedom - strive to get off shift, become an EE or PE and drive up from there - sadly - staying on shift is a dead end as far as I’m concerned. Unionizing won’t change that.

Unions are what we need

I chuckle at these union messages, not because I don't agree but because people are afraid to risk their current position with no guarantees a union would happen. Once an HR rep detects you're part of a union discussion, you might as well get your resume ready. The best option is just quit and move on to a better company with lesson learned. Speak to your peers who have quit, see how they prosper.

@gg Unfortunately they seek parity with pay, but the hard truth is not every one deserves to be paid the same

High performers only make more if they're cozy with the boss. Everyone knows the overpaid over promoted person in their department. They usually handle the birthday party snacks.

You will collectively make less in a union. Why would I want to be paid the same as a low performing. High performers are always paid more. Stop being lazy!!

Some union members make less than some employees. But the benefits and time off are usually better and the layoffs are done by seniority typically

@b0+1jr022ft8 that is actually false. It's common misinformation spread by HR to keep you under their thumb. Lol even OP said there would be HR in this post. Union members actually earn on average 12% more than non-union members plus you get the benefit of having a pension, better benefits, and cannot get fired if you boss is having a bad day. If you want further details you can look online. Here's proof. Where is yours?

I'm game for a union OP.
