Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

Why Oxy don't do layoffs

Occidental Petroleum increased production by 14.8% year-over-year (YoY) to 1.395 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/day).
Cost Management: This production increase was achieved while keeping absolute operating costs unchanged, leading to a reduction in per-barrel operating expenses.

Total production in Q2 2025 reached 1,400 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (Mboed), which was above the mid-point of guidance.

Cost Management

  • Despite higher production, Oxy kept costs flat or reduced them:
    • Drilling costs dropped by 14% due to efficiency gains.
    • Lease operating expenses decreased, helping offset lower commodity prices.
    • Capital expenditure guidance was reduced by $200 million, and domestic operating costs by $150 million in Q1 2025.

@wy You question is “Is Oxy good enough to stand if your best people leave?” It’s like asking if a sports team is good enough to win if its best players leave. The obvious answer to your question is they will not be as good as before the best people left. What a shocker.

Old timers at Oxy provide insight into how the corporation works. They know that Oxy takes shortcuts and doesn’t get involved in lengthy processes. It is better to get the 90 percent answer in half the time as the 99% answer. Unless you are building bridges and buildings or going to the moon.

Amoco thought that too. Make it voluntary and unload the poor performers. What happened was the opposite. The highly respected and the best performers decided to take the money and look for greener pastures. It got so bad that Amoco revoked the package and later cleaned house in an involuntary manner. Is Oxy good enough to stand if your best people leave? I don't think so...

OXY does voluntary severance packages. I think it’s the best way to do layoffs. Some people are ready to leave. So let them leave. Do you really want to keep people who are ready to leave? I don’t.

I wholeheartedly agree.

It really is "The Real Thing" - that whole preferred dividend thing, that is.

If they were lean then they wouldn’t have the hybrid work schedule. They have way too many people. It is all driven by VH who would lose her status if she ever admitted the company has too many employees. Imagine the great female CEO having to lay people off. What a sh-t show this place is.

You speak of vulgar language. People who are educated and are from the USA speak properly. I would guess the poster is from some town like Waco or Tyler or some other town concentrated with ignorant people. But then again all of Texas is full of ignorant, dump fu-k, religious, g-n toting, maga, Abbot loving, conservative, DT loving, anti democratic, anti constitutional, stupid, people. But they have Christian beliefs? These fu--ing people are so far from loving it is ridiculous. By the way I love you all.

@ay You misunderstand. They are the employer of choice in the sense that they chose to end your career earlier than you wanted. Remember? Surprise! Here’s your cardboard box. That’s gotta sting still.

@aw in the UK, they refer to vacations as holidays, apartments as flats, and they use plural verbs when referring to companies, so “Oxy don’t” or “Oxy are” is acceptable. Do some research before you post again if you want to be taken seriously.

Its time to cut the fat. Its beyond time. And that doesn't mean only get rid of old folks. Lots of mid career folks need a wake up call.

I would bet we have a voluntary workforce reduction and many of the ones 55 and older with 10 years of service that qualify for the insurance will take it. I personally think 55 is still pretty young and they have a lot to offer, so those folks may hold off. It would not be a surprise me if the ones 62 and older line up to take such a package if they are ready. I bet that would clear the ranks around 5-7% of the workforce.

They prefer employee reductions through work place disasters and environmental catastrophes. They prefer to call themselves the employer of choice by doing this, especially in Aberdeen. Best Company Ever is what they tell themselves again and again.
