Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

General Motors laying off nearly 1,000 white collar workers

https://www.cbsnews.com/detroit/news/general-motors-lays-off-about-1000-workers/

General Motors is laying off about 1,000 workers worldwide, shedding costs as it tries to compete in a crowded global automobile market.

The workers, mostly white collar, were notified about the decisions early Friday. The company confirmed the layoffs in a statement but gave few details.

"We need to optimize for speed and excellence," the statement said. "This includes operating with efficiency, ensuring we have the right team structure and focusing on our top priorities."

GM and other automakers have been navigating an uncertain transition to electric vehicles both in the U.S. and worldwide, trying to figure out where to invest capital and how fast the switch will happen.

The company has had to develop and update gas-powered models while investing in EV battery and assembly plants as well as minerals and other parts for the next generation of electric vehicles.

I enjoy the back in the day stories, please keep them up.

Some people here have stories as deep as a puddle. They aren't as fun to read.

Keep your racist, hate-fueled rhetoric somewhere else.
It's not helpful and neither are your "back in my day" stories.

I as well don’t miss that sh-t 💩 show. As a 30 year hourly then salary employee I can say I appreciate the living it gave me but the ill will environment it provided was very toxic. The leadership wouldn’t penalize those who didn’t perform like it seems they are trying to do now and glad to see it come to fruition. It’s about time. The only thing I can imagine is that those all let go weren’t all the bottom dwellers and instead the company protected the useless protected individuals. I know because I saw it with my own eyes. Example: We had a useless Mexican female who couldn’t manage three employees so they gave her a workplace of choice job just filling in when people were on vacation instead of just firing her for nonperformance. Yeah a lot of instances just like that were useless individuals getting jobs that weren’t needed only because they had to meet HR quotas. A total disgrace but true DEI company GM has become, thus the reason I don’t purchase any of their products anymore. Other companies are probably just as bad but I saw this one fail my integrity test with my own eyes so I will pass and buy something else.

I sure don’t miss that s#$&t show. I retired after a layoff during COVID and love it. I miss some of the people, but not many. Too many GM people always looking to blame others and backstab.
Different standards- vendors were under a microscope, but GM lifers ( especially UAW) could do no wrong. With all the bureaucracy and lack of decision making, the simplest things took a long time. I still keep in touch with a few, and laugh every time they tell me that they have had frequent turnover on the job that I held for many years.

Wave after wave, after wave… get out now while you can is always the real & honest answer, after each of these layoff rounds. It’s NOT ending and it’s not performance based, so don’t kid yourself. If you’re making a lot and have been there a while (and you’re not on the “favorites” list of your boss due to years of a— kissing), embrace change and move on! I got out two years ago, never been happier, working for a sane employer now, no more toxic BS. Godspeed to those impacted today.

Stack ranking is based on whether the boss likes you, not your actual performance.

Your boss probably doesn't know who is doing what on his team.

@vuc+1vvsRbYW $15 billion EBITDA this year, $49,000 ARPU, $13 billion in cash, if this is "broke" everyone should be woke. GM's running laps around Ford and STLA, which makes these cuts even tougher.

Let's also keep the contract workers in our thoughts and help them if we can. Many in engineering were cut. Very, very sad. In the past, people could make a great living working contract and without constant fear. Now, it seems almost every quarter they let go of mass amounts of them and they aren't even counted. Really not a great way to do business.
