First off, if you were laid off by GM today, I’m sorry that this happened to you.
When you start looking for a new job, check out Navistar which is near Chicago. They could certainly use help in the software area and it might be a good opportunity for some of you.
Best of luck to all who were affected.

Then why do they always lay off the older but more experienced employees?

It's craziness. They have done this for the last 20 years. Top performers, employees who could create massive change and increase in revenue for the company.

Reduced down to: "Who gets paid the most in your org? Fire them first"

My heart ❤️goes out to the ~600 folks at the Warren Tech Ctr who are losing their jobs today. But don’t say you weren’t warned on this board for many months and were in denial. Also note, this is likely the 1st wave of engineering layoffs.

“These people are going to have a very difficult time finding anything close to what they had at GM.” That’s right… Ole Mary’s got you just where she wanted you. Now you’re getting that swift kick to the Cahones🦵🤣

So by “the real work happens on the shop floor” are you referring to fixing all the recalls or just repairs of the sh$&y quality of GM products in general?

Haha - where do you suppose all the up front work happens to give folks on the shop floor work to do in the first place?

Some recently hired younger workers will be laid off along with the targeted older, higher-paid worker to avoid an age-discrimination lawsuit. They hire expendable new hires in a younger age group well in advance of lay-off plans for this purpose.

By God, what an ignorant take. Had you bothered to read the article before looking like a fool, you might have read:

"Software, specifically monetizing it, has been a major focus for automakers, including GM, as it eyes recurring revenue opportunities such as subscriptions to boost profits."

Why don't you trundle off and organize your sc--wdriver drawer? Big people are talking here...

Then why do they always lay off the older but more experienced employees?

I bet the lure of "cheap" will be too strong for them to resist, and Mountain View will have layoffs because "they're too expensive."

Maybe the SLT is shifting from low cost NCH and H1b software people to higher quality but more expensive ones.

Penny wise but pound foolish never pays off.

You get what you pay for.

Good luck, and a promising note: Being laid off from GM in 2019 was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

The best advice I can give is to apply/interview to as many places as possible just in case so you have a choice and possibly get paid severance and a sign-on bonus at the same time.

Good. These worthless fu--s trying to work from home still need to go. The real work happens on the shop floor.

I’m sure when it hits the assembly lines they’ll blame the UAW and the big contract

Well, the handwriting's been on the wall for a long time.

I think we all knew it was coming, and it isn't over yet.
