Thread regarding Citigroup Inc. / Citibank / Citi layoffs

No one has ever seen this at Citi. Its never existed so count your blessings and quit complaining.

A toxic leader will use your ambition as a means to control and manipulate you.

  1. They dangle the carrot of promotions or raises to keep you working harder, even when no real opportunity exists.
  1. They set overly ambitious targets that are almost impossible to achieve. When you struggle, they use it as a way to criticise and control you.
  1. They pit employees against each other to foster an environment of "trust no one, take no prisoners".
  1. They shower you with praise when you meet their expectations but withhold recognition or critique you harshly when you don’t.
  1. They exploit your fear of failure to push you beyond reasonable limits (i.e. get you to overwork and sacrifice your mental health and wellbeing).
  1. They reward those who align with their personal agendas and create an environment of favouritism.
  1. They make you feel like your job performance is tied to your self-worth.
  1. They downplay or overlook your successes and make you feel like you have to work harder just to earn basic recognition or their approval.
  1. They subtly undermine your confidence by questioning your capabilities and decision-making.

Remember, your ambition is a powerful asset, but toxic leaders will exploit it to keep you under their thumb.

When employees hate their jobs, they have one Foot out the door and are actively Interviewing trying to get the other foot out! By this time they're just doing the bare minimum work because they've already given up on Citi or rather Sh!tty "bank"!

In a few weeks it will be VOE BullSh!t time. Time to again waste Shareholders' money and time since Citi is unable or unwilling to Change For its Employees. Drvg and Alcoh0l Addicts Lie to themselves and the world all the time rationalizing that they're Not Addicts, they can control it, the Toxic substance/practices/culture is Not affecting them negatively contrary to what the World is telling them, etc.. The Addicts even sneak in Drvgs and Alcoh0l behind the backs of their caretakers, friends and family for fear of admonishment. Remember, TV Actor Matthew Perry ??

The OP must be talking about Citi Risk "Management" and Internal Audit.

OP here, believe it or not, don’t care either way…..

The post was made with sarcasm of course. Out of the 5 managers I’ve had here at C, 3 of them exhibited most if not all of the nine points listed. Managing out of fear is so common place here most employees are numb to it. When a “new” person signs on, after 6 months or so of the honeymoon is over with, they are hit with reality and hit a new low in moral. Half leave the other half succumb to it as this is the way things are now. Until C changes the way it thinks and manages, nothing will be better. Bottom line, nothing will change. Mgmt knows EXACTLY the state of things and does nothing to correct it.

Oh sure they hand out survey after survey and ask you to speak up but we all know its a trap and we all know how that ends up if you do. Your best option, is to leave.

Post ID: @auj+1uf6EzUH These behaviours and actions also happen in entire departments and/or entire companies Not just with individual managers. These bahaviours definitely happen in Citi.

My experience as well. Very disappointing. Totally agree with the OP here.

I've witnessed my old micromanaging director have literally his entire team turnover every single year, because nobody respects him. Here continues on in his role, stuck in the same place because he has no obvious skills other than being subordinate to his boss of the month

Lol. This IS how it is at Citi. The entire list is my experience and many of my friends here as well. It's full of toxic managers and other toxic people too. I agree with some of the other posters on using this as an opportunity to develop one's skills.

Also, do not believe these actions previous managers made to make their employees suffer go without any repercussions. Karma is digital, and if you do not see their karma take place, it will happen in their lives, be it after your time on the team or in their personal life.

Post ID: @vjq+1uf6EzUH Follow up to this post. The other manager who converted the Contractor to FTE to be my new "manager" and the Contractor-Converted-To-FTE were both netted in the Layoff waves between Fall 2023 to 1Q2024. LOL! Yes, Karma is indeed a B!tch. The icing on the cake is that Citi ostensibly called the firings "Layoffs". How can the maneuvers be "Layoffs" when the new org charts show and there were announcements that open Job requisitions are in place to replace the Motherfvckers for the same exact job titles, job descriptions, responsibilities etc. ??? Their Contractor-to-FTE obviously didn't work out.

Post ID: @OP+1uf6EzUH Unfortunately, toxic "managers" rarely get their comeuppance. When it does happen, it's so unbelievably delicious and satisfying to see Karma at work, finally ! I previously posted about my former "manager" in Citi who was overlooked for her promotion by her new manager when he transferred to a new group within the same department. Instead of promoting her to his previous role, he hired an external candidate from JPMChase who's at least 15 years younger than her and has less work experience and knowledge of the subject matters needed for their jobs.
She had done the same with me prior to her transferring to the new department. She along with another "manager" converted a Contractor to FTE who has significantly less work experience and knowledge than me to become my "manager" instead of promoting me to her role that she was leaving.
It's been at least 5 years since this scenario happened. She still has NOT been promoted in her new department, she's only has One Direct Report AND every one of them Left her after 6 to 12 months. LOL! The first DR Left Citi after 6 months for a better external job. The 2nd DR left her after 12 months and lasted 12 months Only because his New job was a transfer to a different group within the same department. Her DRs obviously caught on to her SH!TShow, planned and executed their Exit Strategies asap. LOL! Karma is a B!tch !
Citi decided Not to give her another DR after the 2nd one. LOL!

Post ID: @cre+1uf6EzUH Correct. The OP is lying, delusional and/or in denial. This happens everyday in Citi and other companies. Maybe it doesn't happen in every Department, but these behaviours and scenarios happen everyday in every company including and especially in Citi.

I went through each of these points for my time in Citi as a developer. Been here four years now but during these harsh working conditions, I was able to develop my skills, even if its self taught since any of the teams wanted to teach me their ways. Just assigned work and expected to complete it. These working conditions make you a little more resilient and when you are able to transfer to a better working environment, you will appreciate it more, my perspective.
